March 16-- Mar. 16--WILLMAR -- Another pile of sand and more sandbags are available for free for Kandiyohi County residents who may be experiencing minor residential water damage because of melting snow and recent rains.
Kandiyohi County Emergency Management Director Kim Lindahl said sand and sandbags at the Willmar Community Center should last through the weekend. People should bring a shovel and only fill bags about half-full to reduce the chance of injury.
Lindahl said the sand is only to be used for sandbags.
She also offered some tips to prevent water seepage.
* Remove snow in a 3- to 5-foot perimeter around your home
* Remove snow from the roof
* Clean out frozen gutters that may have snow and ice
* Thaw downspouts
People who do experience flooding may want to have items like bleach, gloves and mop on hand for clean-up.
She also advised homeowners to take photos or video of any damage before you begin cleaning up to submit to your insurance company.
