Police: Man attacks officer with knife, is fatally shot

MONTGOMERY VILLAGE - Authorities in Maryland say a man reporting a stolen bicycle suddenly attacked a police officer with a knife and was shot dead by the officer. Police in Montgomery County, near Washington, D.C., said in a statement that Officer Matthew McGowan had spent 17 minutes late Monday taking information about the theft.

Investigators say footage from McGowan's body camera shows 28-year-old Richard Alexander Tilley pulling out a knife and lunging at McGowan. Police say McGowan defended himself and fell to the ground, but Tilley continued to attack him. Authorities say McGowan fired several rounds at Tilley, striking him. Tilley died at a hospital. Police say both McGowan and Tilley are white.

Charges against teen dropped in fatal stabbing

WHEATON - Prosecutors have dropped murder charges against a teenager in the fatal stabbings of two men inside a Maryland mall near Washington.

Ramon Korionoff, a spokesman for the Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office, said Tuesday that prosecutors have determined there is "insufficient evidence" to proceed. Korionoff said an investigation is ongoing. He declined to say anything further about it.

Angelo Lamont Jackson was charged in January with two counts of first degree murder in the case. He was 17 at the time and charged as an adult.

Police had said that surveillance video from Westfield Wheaton mall showed the teen fighting with the men. Other patrons broke up the fight. Police said video showed the teen stabbing one man and pursuing the other while still armed. Both later died at hospitals.

Officials: Fire at apartment is arson-related

TAKOMA PARK - Officials say a fire that broke out at an apartment complex in a D.C. suburb is arson-related.

It started Sunday afternoon at the Hillwood Manor apartments in Takoma Park. Montgomery County Fire spokesman Pete Piringer said one person, who was hospitalized, is being interviewed. That person's name was not released, pending charges. Piringer says five people were trapped on the second floor but were rescued using a ladder. Two people were displaced.

Teen contends sex in bathroom was consensual

ROCKVILLE - Attorneys for a teenager accused of raping a 14-year-old girl in a high school bathroom say the sex was consensual.

Seventeen-year-old Jose Montano and 18-year-old Henry Sanchez are both charged with rape. Police said they took turns sexually assaulting the girl at Rockville High School. The case received national attention after the White House called it an example of why President Donald Trump wants to crack down on illegal immigration. Officials said Sanchez came to the U.S. from Guatemala illegally. In a court filing Monday, Montano's lawyer said the girl agreed in text messages to have sex with Montano.
