The following Virginia Beach residents recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.:

* Army Reserve Pvt. Lakendra S. Jones

* Army Pvt. Jamel O. Brown, a 2009 graduate of Bayside High School

Army Pfc. Jessie A. Sperling graduated from the Field Artillery Automated Tactical Data Systems Specialist Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla.

The following Virginia Beach residents recently graduated from Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill:

* Navy Seaman Tarrell C. Jones, a 2011 graduate of Green Run High School

* Navy Seaman Recruit Sean A. Pearson, a 2007 graduate of Bayside High School

Navy Ensign Andrew K. McCleske recently graduated from Officer Candidate School and has received a commission as an ensign in the Navy while assigned at Officer Training Command in Newport, R.I.

The following Virginia Beach residents recently graduated from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C.:

* Marine Corps Pvt. Kevin Ta, a 2005 graduate of Green Run High School

* Marine Corps Pvt. Joshua E. Backus, a 2008 graduate of Salem High School

* Marine Corps Pvt. Kyle W. Sutton, a 2009 graduate ofCox High School

* Marine Corps Pvt. James P. Kinney, a 2005 graduate of Kempsville High School

SCHOOL NEWS

Candice Cheshire, a library media assistant at Green Run High School, recently won a $2,000 grant in the 2012 ING Unsung Heroes competition. The award, just one of 100 across the U.S., will help fund her program, "Readerz."

Cheshire is now competing for one of the top three prizes: an additional $5,000, $10,000 or $25,000. ING U.S. constitutes the U.S.- based retirement, investment and insurance operations of ING Groep N.V., which has headquarters in the Netherlands.
