Mike Tuffin appointed AHIP president and CEO
WASHINGTON, D.C. – (December 11, 2023) – AHIP is pleased to announce the appointment of Mike Tuffin as its next President and CEO, effective January 8, 2024. Tuffin returns to AHIP having served as its Executive Vice President for Public Affairs from 2003-2012. He succeeds Julie Simon Miller, AHIP’s General Counsel, who has served as Interim CEO since September 2023.
In this role, Tuffin will be responsible for leading AHIP’s nationwide advocacy efforts on the industry’s priority issues. As the leading voice for the health insurance industry, AHIP represents more than 100 diverse companies providing health care coverage for millions of consumers and families. AHIP’s members offer coverage for individuals and employees in the commercial market as well as Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries; provide dental and vision benefits; and offer long-term care and supplemental insurance.
“AHIP’s Board of Directors led a thorough search for a forward-looking leader and advocate with extensive health care experience. As a corporate executive, association leader and consultant, Mike has demonstrated an ability to successfully lead teams, partner with key stakeholders and advance policy outcomes that are critical to the health and security of the people our industry serves. We are very pleased to welcome him back to AHIP and to have his voice leading the industry at this critical time,” said David Holmberg, Chair of AHIP’s Board of Directors.
“I would like to express my appreciation for Julie and her tireless work to advance AHIP’s mission as Interim CEO,” said Pat Geraghty, President and CEO, GuideWell and Florida Blue and the incoming Chairman of AHIP’s Board of Directors in 2024. “I look forward to working with Mike as he takes the helm of our organization and leads us as we continue to advocate for the health of all Americans.”
Tuffin has served as Senior Vice President for External Affairs for UnitedHealth Group since 2015 and previously served as Managing Director of APCO Worldwide’s Washington, D.C. headquarters. Throughout his career, he has played a pivotal role in advancing the industry’s key priorities in support of more affordable, accessible care for millions of Americans, including ensuring stability and choice for consumers served by commercial plans and public programs, addressing the high cost of prescription drugs and protecting consumers from surprise medical bills.
“Millions of American families and employers count on AHIP’s members for their coverage and care and for support in navigating our complex health care system,” Tuffin said. “I am honored to join Julie and the high-performing AHIP team in advancing this critical work.”
“I've had the pleasure of working with Mike over many years as a colleague,” said Julie Simon Miller, Interim CEO. “There couldn’t be a better person to lead our members in 2024 and beyond, and I look forward to continuing to work together to advance this vitally important industry in its pursuit to help all people reach their full health potential.”
