Capital (Annapolis, MD)

Maryland

Man charged with assaulting agent

WASHINGTON - A Maryland man is accused of assaulting a uniformed U.S. Secret Service officer outside the White House while shouting for officers to kill him.

The Washington Post reports 20-year-old Steven Carmona of Wheaton, Maryland, was released from jail Tuesday and charged with assault. Court documents say an officer told Carmona he couldn't park in a crosswalk near the White House. They say Carmona then "squared-off" against an officer and was taken to the ground by officers. They say Carmona then punched one officer twice in the face. They say Carmona was shouting "where is the president" and "just end it, just kill me." Carmona must report for drug testing and avoid a four-block area around the White House.

Baltimore County

Police: Officer shoots passenger in SUV after chase, crashes

ROSEDALE - Police say an officer in Maryland shot a man after a chase and two crashes. Baltimore County police said in a release that an officer responded to a theft report at a Walgreens in Parkville early Tuesday and pursued an SUV. The driver led a chase to Rosedale, crashing into the cruiser twice. When the officer approached, police say the driver ignored commands to get out and he fired, striking the passenger's arm. The passenger is expected to survive. The driver wasn't hurt. Officer 1st Class McCain's police powers are suspended, with pay. A fatal shooting last year by McCain was found to be justified. He was also involved in a non-fatal shooting in 2006. The department doesn't release officers' first names or the races of officers or people shot.

Woman charged with false carjacking report

BEAR, Del. - Delaware State Police say a woman who claimed to be the victim of a carjacking set up by an intentional crash has turned herself in to face criminal charges. Thirty-year-old Jane Macauley of Middletown surrendered to state police on Tuesday and was charged with insurance fraud and falsely reporting an incident. She was released on $2,000 unsecured bail. Macauley reported in April that her car had been rammed by another vehicle on Route 71 in Bear. She said that after she and the other driver pulled over, the other driver got in her car and drove off, while a passenger in the striking vehicle moved to the driver's seat and drove off in that car.

Police say Macauley falsely reported the incident in order to make a fraudulent insurance claim.

Schools no longer required to report student,

worker threats

DOVER, Del. - Schools are no longer required to report threats to kill or seriously injure public school students or employees to Delaware's Department of Education. A notice of the administrative change was published this week - more than six years after lawmakers eliminated both terroristic threatening and offensive touching of school employees from mandatory reporting to police.
