Marsh to Purchase SME Insurance Services

Manufacturing Close - Up

Marsh reported that it had reached a definitive agreement to acquire Leeds-based SME Insurance Services (SMEi), an independent broker which provides specialist commercial insurance to small and medium-sized enterprises across the UK.

Terms of the transaction, which is expected to close in the third quarter of this year, were not disclosed.

In a release, the Company noted that SMEi has developed a highly effective online and telephone-based business model, which enables it to provide clients with flexible and comprehensive insurance solutions, tailored to their individual requirements, regardless of size or risk profile. SMEi also operates Broker2Broker, an online trading platform that offers independent insurance brokers access to a wide range of products through a panel of commercial insurers.

On closing, Roger Snowden and Jason Gandy, co-founders of SMEi, will join Marsh to help drive forward its small and medium-sized enterprise strategy, reporting to Julie Page, CEO of Marsh's UK Commercial and Consumer Division.

"This transaction will further enhance Marsh's capability to serve small and medium-sized businesses across the UK and builds on our earlier acquisition of Central Insurance Services (CIS). Marsh identified both SMEi and CIS as high quality, fast-growing businesses," said Mark Weil, CEO, Marsh UK & Ireland. "The SMEi online and call center platform, when combined with Marsh's ability to provide extensive risk and insurance advice and its strong insurer relationships, will create a breakthrough in the convenience, quality, and cost of insurance solutions available to SMEs. The addition of the SMEi's Broker2Broker platform will also bring significant benefit to the members of Marsh's broker networks."

Jason Gandy, co-founder of SMEi, said: "Becoming part of Marsh is good news for our clients and colleagues. By combining our expertise with Marsh's wide range of services we will be able to accelerate our development and widen our range of products. Our colleagues will also benefit from expanded career opportunities. We look forward to becoming part of Marsh and delivering a better way for SMEs to obtain the best risk and insurance advice."

Marsh specializes in insurance broking and risk management.

SME Insurance Services is an independent broker providing specialist commercial insurance to small and medium sized businesses.

The New Way Life Insurers Are Fact-Checking Your Application

Elizabeth AldrichThe Messenger

In 2026, insurers might know more about you than you know about yourself.

Applying for life insurance used to require a weeks-long endurance test of paperwork, blood draws and urine samples. But thanks to improvements in technology and wider access to data, insurers can often fact-check your medical and financial history on the spot.

This shift toward real-time data includes a recent partnership between the Medical Information Bureau (MIB) — a database insurers use to verify your information and detect fraud — and major credit bureau Equifax. For consumers, insurers having access to more data could mean faster approvals and lower rates. But there's also a risk your application gets flagged for discrepancies, leading to delays or even a flat-out rejection.

Here's what experts are seeing behind the scenes, and how you can prepare your medical and financial "resume" to avoid getting flagged.

More data can mean faster, fairer rates

For over 100 years, underwriters have relied on the MIB to find medical information that didn't make it onto an application, from a forgotten prescription to a lie about tobacco use. But now, they can spot discrepancies related to your job and income just as quickly. In January, the MIB announced an agreement with Equifax that gives underwriters real-time access to up to 24 months of income data, job titles and employment dates for more than half of the U.S. workforce.

While it might feel invasive, this type of verification is nothing new, says Barbara Pietrangelo, a certified financial planner and member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors Board of Trustees. Improved data access just streamlines what underwriters have always done — and for applicants, that can mean faster life insurance approvals. "What I found personally is that I'm getting policies issued within a day or two," Pietrangelo says. "Stuff that used to take six weeks, we're getting approved very quickly."

Beyond speed, better data can lower premiums by removing the guesswork. Tony Steuer, a chartered life underwriter and author of "Questions and Answers on Life Insurance," explains that because of how life insurance underwriting works, information gaps in an applicant's profile can actually lead to higher rates.

During underwriting, insurers assign you to a "rating class" based on how risky you are to cover. When information is missing, insurers don't have a complete picture of that risk — and they often offset that uncertainty with higher rates, Steuer says. The easier it is to fill in these gaps with data, the more accurately insurers can price policies, which often translates to direct savings for the consumer.

Avoiding application speed bumps

It's never been easier for insurers to flag discrepancies in your life insurance application. While being honest is the first step, these red flags aren't always the result of a deliberate lie.

Applicants often overlook past health issues because they feel healthy today. "One client the other day was like, 'Yeah, ever since my leg was amputated last year because of diabetes and I got my [prosthetic] leg, I'm great,'" Pietrangelo says. But insurers aren't just looking at your current state — they're assessing your medical history, too.

Disclosing pre-existing conditions and medications you take is crucial. Pietrangelo suggests taking a quick look in your prescription drawer to jog your memory, and you can pull up your medical records on patient portals like MyChart. You'll likely need to complete a life insurance medical exam as part of your application, too.

If you run into a question you can't answer, don't try to fill in the blanks yourself. "The worst thing you can do is guess on an application," Steuer says. "The insurance company is going to have to presume that you might be lying because it's their money that's at risk."

Instead, just be honest and tell them you don't know. "An underwriter's not going to penalize you if you say, 'I don't remember'," Steuer says, noting that insurers will use their data to fill in those gaps for you.

When human advocacy beats an algorithm

If you're applying for life insurance with a major medical or financial issue on your record, like a heart attack or a bankruptcy, Steuer recommends sending the insurer a cover letter explaining your situation. It might sound old-fashioned, but a letter allows you to provide context that an algorithm might miss.

Despite the shift toward faster approvals, shopping for life insurance can still be lengthy and overwhelming. Working with a trusted financial professional can give you a human advocate to help you navigate the process. If you take this route, Steuer suggests an independent life insurance agent who works with multiple companies over a captive agent who works for just one.

"The way I explain it to people is it's like if you walk into a Mercedes dealership, they're going to try to sell you a Mercedes," Steuer says. An independent agent can shop around and help you find the best fit for your particular medical and financial history.

How to audit your own data

If you're worried your application won't match the underwriter's "answer key," you can do a self-audit before you apply. While it isn't necessary to pull every report, doing so can offer peace of mind — especially if you believe there's an error in one of your records.

Here's where to start:

Your MIB report: You're entitled to one free copy of your MIB consumer file every 12 months. You can request it at MIB.com, and doing so won't hurt your credit score.Employment and income data: You can find out what insurers see regarding your job history and pay by requesting your employment data report through Equifax's The Work Number.Health history: You have a legal right to your medical records under privacy laws. The fastest way to see your history of diagnoses and prescriptions is by logging into patient portals like MyChart. You can also contact your health care provider(s) directly.Credit history: You can request one free credit report every 12 months from each of the three major credit bureaus at AnnualCreditReport.com. While your credit score doesn't impact your life insurance application, a bankruptcy on your credit report could.Motor vehicle record: You can contact your state's DMV to request your driving record, although you may have to pay a small fee. Most insurers look at the last three to five years of your driving record for repeated moving violations and DUIs that could impact your risk rating.
