Local musicians step up to help Quan family

Cleburne Times-Review (TX)

Jan. 19--A group of local musicians have teamed up to host a special concert to benefit the Quan family of Burleson after a Jan. 7 car wreck left two family members dead and one critically injured.

The benefit is from 2-7 p.m. Jan. 28 at Old Texas Brewing Co., 112 W. Ellison St. in Burleson.

The cost to attend is a $10 donation at the door for adults; children are free.

Each donation includes a free raffle ticket for a chance to win door prizes including a professional guided catfish trip by Lake Tawokoni Guide Service for up to four people and a custom Oak Cliff acoustic guitar.

Music will be performed by Steve Helms, Zac Stokes, Jesse Jennings, Shane Watson, Brittany Oviedo, Doug Rose, Keith Owens, Austin Upchurch, Canaan Bryce and Zuez Madrigal.

Brittany Oviedo of Alvarado said she hopes many will attend to help the family.

"The day that the news was broke about the horrible accident I made a post on Facebook about wanting to have a benefit, within hours I had over a hundred shares on the post and tons of messages from people wanting to donate," she said. "I think it's so incredible how one community can have a bond so strong. Even some of the most talented musicians in the DFW areas reached out to donate their time -- it's truly incredible to be able to see such kindness."

Texas Department of Public Safety Staff Sgt. Dub Gillum said Keith Quan, 40, was driving a passenger van when it collided with a Ford F-150 pickup being driven by, Andrew Smith, 30, of Burleson at about 5:45 p.m. in the 2300 block of Renfro Street on Jan. 7.

DPS reported that the van stopped to make a left turn, but the driver of the pickup did not see it and struck the vehicle from behind, pushing it into the northbound lanes.

A Ford Ranger pickup, driven by Troy Malicoat, 53, and his mother, Elizabeth Malicoat, 81, struck the van.

Lori Quan, 37, and Hannah Quan, 7, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Keith Quan and Claire Quan, 3, were transported to nearby hospitals. Claire was released from care the same night.

Gillum said the contributing factor in the crash was driver inattention. No charges have been filed.

Memorial services for Lori and Hannah were held Thursday at Cana Baptist Church in Burleson.

Keith's cousin, Denise Quan, said he remains in intensive care at John Peter Smith Hospital with multiple injuries and is fighting a serious infection.

"His insurance benefits are set to expire in 50 days because he's on Lori's policy, and Lori is now deceased," she said. "Keith's parents are now engaged in a race against time to obtain power of attorney or guardianship, so they can make critical decisions involving Keith and Claire until Keith regains full consciousness. Claire is in the care of close family friends."

Friends and family have also raised more than $5,000 on GoFundMe.
