Letters: Cory Gardner; USPS

Daily Times-Call (Longmont, CO)

Sep. 30--Your health is unimportant to Gardner

Cory Gardner has been bragging about introducing a bill that, supposedly, prevents health insurance companies from rejecting you for having a pre-existing condition. The way he describes it, this is ground-breaking, something we've never had before, we should give him another six years as senator in return.

In truth, it's nothing more than returning power to health insurance companies and who can still reject you for a pre-existing condition. It's a farce.

This shouldn't be surprising. Sen. Gardner has supported every single attempt by Republicans to gut the Affordable Care Act. This includes nine votes to eliminate the part of ACA that prevents health insurance companies denying coverage due to pre-existing conditions.

Gardner's bill puts health insurance companies back in the driver seat when it comes to our health care and does nothing to help low- or middle-income people afford premiums for coverage. ACA does both of these things and more. That's why millions of Americans like it.

Don't be fooled by Gardner's boyish smile or promises. His bill is nothing more than more of what we had before the Affordable Care Act. Gardner has been lock-step with Donald Trump all the way. Your health is unimportant. It's all about keeping power, staying in office.

John Hickenlooper wasn't my first choice for senator, but at least he gets what affordable health care means.

We must respect the USPS

The Trump Administration has shown a blatant disregard for the health of the USPS since Louis DeJoy has taken on the position of Postmaster General. It has been distressing watching DeJoy actively work to dismantle USPS operations and wreck what has always been an institution highly regarded by the American people.

It's not just been Postmaster DeJoy who has been irresponsible, however. While the House recently approved a bill to send a much needed $25 billion to the Postal Service and to end DeJoy's service cuts, we have yet to see a vote on the matter in the Senate. Colorado's Sen. Gardner is profoundly letting us down if he is not ready to fight for something so fundamentally important to American lives and the health of our democracy as the USPS.

Remember, it's not the U.S. Corporation or the U.S. Postal Company -- it's the United States Postal Service. For generations, the USPS been like a friend to countless Americans by providing a comforting, connecting link in difficult times.

When friends are in need, you help them. I believe that the Senate in good conscience must immediately pass the "Delivering for America Act" to ensure that the Post Office is well-funded, well-operated, and well-protected.
