Kiplinger’s Ranks FAIR Health Website as “Best Health Care Cost Estimator”

By a News Reporter-Staff News Editor at Health & Medicine Week -- FAIR Health, an independent nonprofit organization that advances system-wide healthcare cost transparency, has earned a place on the Kiplinger's Personal Finance 2016 Best List. In the annual selection of consumer services it recommends for its readership, Kiplinger's recognized FAIR Health in the category of "Best Websites and Tools to Save on Your Health, 2016." FAIR Health was singled out as offering the "Best health care cost estimator." The list appears in the publication's December 2016 issue (see also FAIR Health).

In addition to the acknowledgement by Kiplinger's, Strategic Health Care Communications has notified FAIR Health that its consumer website will receive a 2016 eHealthcare Leadership Award--the fifth consecutive year that the organization has honored the FAIR Health website. Earlier in 2016, FAIR Health President Robin Gelburd was named a recipient of a 2016 Dig|Benefits Technology Innovator Award sponsored by Employee Benefit News. The citation recognizes Ms. Gelburd's role in launching and directing FAIR Health's consumer website and its associated mobile apps. These awards join the list of honors previously received by FAIR Health for its consumer offerings, including recognition from the White House, AHRQ, URAC and AppPicker.

Continual Enhancements to Consumer Healthcare Engagement Tools

In keeping with its commitment to offer consumers the cost estimation capabilities, educational content and resources they need to get the most out of their health insurance coverage, FAIR Health recently added facility charges to its consumer website's cost lookup tool which provides healthcare costs estimates for services in over 490 geographic areas nationwide. This new feature estimates costs for services provided in hospital outpatient facilities and ambulatory surgery centers. When combined with the site's cost estimates for professional medical and dental services, healthcare supplies, ambulance transportation and other services, the facility data offer consumers a more complete view of the cost of care. FAIR Health's consumer website is available in both English and Spanish (fairhealthconsumer.org and consumidor.fairhealth.org, respectively)--as are the organization's mobile apps, FH(®) Cost Lookup and FH(®) CCSalud.

While regular enhancements to its site and apps continue, FAIR Health also is undertaking a comprehensive overhaul of its consumer website. Funded by the New York State Health Foundation, the enhanced website is scheduled for introduction in 2017.

FAIR Health's products and tools are powered by its database of over 21 billion claims for privately billed medical and dental procedures--the nation's largest private insurance claims data repository.
