Kansas gives senior care company $12 million to create 600-plus jobs in Overland Park

Jan. 14--A Place for Mom, which helps families connect with nursing homes and other senior care facilities, plans to hire more than 600 employees in a new Overland Park office.

The company said the new office will include employees who work in management, finance, human resources and information technology. It will also house local advisers, customer service associates and other support staffers, according to a Tuesday news release. Hiring is already underway.

"We are committed to creating a world-class operation in the Kansas City area as we continue to transform our business to best serve our customers," CEO Larry Kutscher said in the news release. "Overland Park will be home to several key areas of our business that will have a direct impact on our company's mission to empower families to make informed and confident senior housing decisions that best fit their unique needs."

A Place For Mom began in 2000 and says it is now the continent's largest senior care referral service.

A spokesperson said the company will open in a temporary office of about 29,000 square feet on Overland Park's Sprint campus next week. It plans to then build a new office within the city.

The company is expected to hire more than 600 people over the next five years, said Ryan Brinker, spokesman for the Kansas Department of Commerce. The department has awarded the firm economic development incentives through seven state programs, including Promoting Employment Across Kansas, High Performance Incentive Program and the Job Creation Fund.

All told, the company will receive about $12 million in state incentives.

"We're thrilled A Place for Mom has chosen Kansas for its new location," Kansas Secretary of Commerce David Toland said in the news release. "The jobs created and the investment in Overland Park will have a significant impact on the Greater Kansas City region."

The company's new offices add to the Kansas City region's existing strength in customer service businesses, said Tim Cowden, president and CEO of the Kansas City Area Development Council. He said the region touts a competitive location for companies from both coasts that need to reach North American customers.
