Kevin Gervasi, David Phillips and Tim Gondeck are nearing the last hurdle in a long process to build an ice arena behind South Shore Health & Racquet Club in St. Joseph Township. Construction of the 36,000-squar-foot building could begin in October if all goes as planned.

Publicity on recent attacks by pit bulls has thrown a scare into some owners, who have turned their dogs over to the Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan. A bill, sponsored by state Sen. Joseph Mack, D-Ironwood, would require pit bull owners to carry $500,000 worth of liability insurance and keep their dogs penned in a "secure" fenced area.
50 years ago – 1972
Mr. and Mrs. Leo T. McCarten of Lakeside displayed a sign designating their farm as a centennial farm. The 40-acre homestead on Lakeside Road, south of Union Pier Road in New Buffalo Township, was bought in 1862 by John McCarten, great-uncle of McCarten. At that time, the farm consisted of 240 acres in New Buffalo, Three Oaks and Chikaming Township.
