National Senior Health & Fitness Day aims to promote the importance of regular physical activity for older adults and to showcase what local organizations are doing in their communities to help improve the health of older adults. It is anticipated that more than 100,000 older adults across the country will participate in health and wellness events at more than 1,000 locations nationwide.

Across the country, National Senior Health & Fitness Day will be celebrated at senior centers; retirement communities; Ys and health clubs; hospitals and health systems; and local aging organizations. Events at these locations in Arizona, California, Nevada and Washington are made possible in part through the support of Humana and SilverSneakers, and will include health fairs, fitness walks, exercise demonstrations, health screenings and presentations by health and fitness experts.

“This year is the 25th anniversary of National Senior Health & Fitness Day, the nation’s largest older adult health promotion event,” said Patricia Henze, executive director of the program. “We are pleased to be working with Humana and SilverSneakers, as well as more than 1,000 local organizations nationwide to organize older adult health and wellness events on Wednesday, May 30.”

“Our sponsorship of National Senior Health & Fitness Day is an example of Humana’s deep commitment to improving the health of the communities we serve 20 percent by the year 2020,” said Dan Tufto, Western Division Medicare Senior Vice President for Humana. “We want our members and the communities we serve to achieve their best health. We do this by partnering with likeminded, health-inspired people and organizations that share our values and want to make a real difference in improving the health of our communities.”

“We are proud of our longstanding partnership with Humana to further this shared mission to support the health of our members in California and Washington through sponsorship of National Senior Health & Fitness Day,” said Steve Janicak, Chief Growth Officer, Tivity Health. “Studies show that staying active is key to health and longevity, demonstrating a long-standing commitment along with Humana to enhance the physical and social well-being of our older adult members.”

Local organizations interested in hosting an official National Senior Health & Fitness Day event can register the event by visiting www.fitnessday.com/senior.
