Hanover: Renters insurance at a low

Evening Sun, The (Hanover, PA)

Nov. 23--Leaving your home for days or weeks at a time during the holidays might require more than locking your doors to keep your belongings safe.

Uninsured renters are particularly at risk for theft, according to a news release from the Pennsylvania Insurance Department.

But Hanover is among the top 20 cheapest places in Pennsylvania to obtain renters insurance, according to a recent study by ValuePenguin.

The study included a collection of renters insurance rates for a sample 1,000 square-foot property with $25,000 in personal property coverage and $100,000 in liability coverage. Quotes were collected and averaged from five major carriers across 92 cities in Pennsylvania.

Hanover ranked the 14th cheapest place for renters insurance, while Philadelphia was the highest. The study also showed premiums in the most expensive places in Pennsylvania are 2.1 times more costly than the cheapest.

"Too many renters don't consider purchasing renters insurance until it's too late," said Insurance Commissioner Teresa Miller.

The number of rented households increased by about 770,000 annually over the last decade, with people age 35 and younger making up 40 percent of renters, the release states.

Tenants' personal belongings are not covered by their landlord's homeowners insurance in the case of theft or damage, Miller said in the release, as the policies cover the space the tenant rents but not the contents within.

"The cost-benefit to purchasing renters insurance favors consumers," said Miller. "Policies are generally inexpensive and in return renters have the peace of mind that their belongings are protected, even when they aren't home."

Take a look at the top 20 cheapest places for renters insurance in Pennsylvania:

2. Chambersburg, $278
