Group plans reuse of John Kam Malt House on Hertel
But LoFaso's Shylo is asking for permission to demolish an adjoining one-story, yellow cinder-block building that was built around 1960. Removing it will reveal the full malt house structure, LoFaso wrote in his letter.

The building was constructed for the
Clark and Mazgajewski left the group a decade ago, while Shylo brought on LoFaso as a partner before he also retired and sold his ownership to LoFaso in 2015.
The land, which is zoned as light industrial, is bounded by the two streets and railroad tracks. It's located within a Brownfield Opportunity Area. According to DEC documents, initial environmental investigations were conducted in 2001 and 2002, with a followup in 2019. Various pollutants -- including metals, organic and semi-volatile compounds and spills -- were found on the Black Rock property, whose cleanup is slated to last through 2021. Shylo is working with Turnkey Environmental Restoration and Benchmark Environmental Engineering Science on the work.
According to DEC documents, LoFaso then plans a historic adaptive reuse of the building, relying on both brownfield and historic tax credits. It will be updated to include "sustainable green designs," including a green roof patio with a deck and garden, as well as a parking area.
