Glen Miller announces run for 8th District Representative

April 05--Glen Miller of Evansville (D) will look to challenge incumbent U.S. Rep. Larry Bucshon (R) in 2018 for the Indiana 8th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Miller, who filed for candidacy in late February, held a news conference Tuesday in front of the Old Vanderburgh County Courthouse to formally announce his run.

He spoke about education reform -- Miller said he's in favor of holding charter and public schools to the same standard and directing more funds to public schools -- as well as election reform, calling the "electoral machine" the "greatest threat to democracy" because of gerrymandering and a lack of term limits for members of Congress.

"We hold our president to that standard where he can only serve eight total years," Miller said, asking why Congress shouldn't be held to the same standard. "I think putting in term limits will open the doors for new ideas in the House and Senate."

He also criticized Bucshon's support of the American Health Care Act, which was meant to repeal parts of the Affordable Care Act but was withdrawn when it did not get enough support in Congress. Miller said he would support single-payer health care.

Miller and campaign manager Jourdan Seib said they were inspired by Sen. Bernie Sanders' campaign for president in 2016.

About a dozen non-media audience members showed up to the announcement and asked Miller his stance on topics like climate change -- he said he accepts scientists' consensus that Earth is warming because of human activity -- and alternative energy sources.

Miller grew up in Kokomo and later attended the University of Evansville, studying creative writing and legal studies, he said.
