For Michiganders who shop for individual health insurance, this year's open enrollment period could be the most frustrating in the history of the Affordable Care Act, or "Obamacare."
Three insurance companies are dropping out of the individual insurance market in 2026 HAP CareSource, Molina and Physician Health Plan, also known as University of Michigan Health Plan and a fourth, Meridian, is ending coverage for metro Detroiters, although keeping it for others. Collectively, the four insurers currently cover more than 200,000 Michiganders.
What's more, extra Affordable Care Act subsidies that made individual plans on the Healthcare.gov marketplace significantly more affordable for middle and upper middle-income earners are expiring at the end of this year, forcing some beneficiaries to pay double or triple what they do now in 2026 for health insurance.
