"FOUR INSURERS DROPPING OBAMACARE COVERAGE IN MICHIGAN" AS PRICE HIKES BACKED BY MIKE ROGERS CAUSE PREMIUMS TO SKYROCKET – MICHIGAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY

States News Service

The following information was released by the Michigan Democratic Party:

The Detroit Free Press reports that three insurance companies are dropping out of Michigan's individual ACA marketplace in 2026, and a fourth is dropping coverage for Metro Detroiters, collectively affecting more than 200,000 Michiganders. This comes as ACA premium costs are "higher than ever" and "could double or triple" for enrollees because of health care price hikes supported by failed GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers and national Republicans.

Price Hike Mike said he "firmly supported" the GOP's toxic tax law that failed to extend ACA premium tax credits, threatening to cause MIchiganders' 2026 premiums to skyrocket:

"Mike Rogers is cheering on the health care crisis that's crushing Michigan families while millionaires like himself get tax handouts at everyone else's expense," said Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Joey Hannum. "This is Mike Rogers' and the GOP's health care plan in action: spiking premiums, ripping away access to affordable health care, and punishing working people to reward the wealthy."

Detroit Free Press: 4 insurers dropping Obamacare in Michigan as costs for some could double or triple

For Michiganders who shop for individual health insurance, this year's open enrollment period could be the most frustrating in the history of the Affordable Care Act, or "Obamacare."

Three insurance companies are dropping out of the individual insurance market in 2026 HAP CareSource, Molina and Physician Health Plan, also known as University of Michigan Health Plan and a fourth, Meridian, is ending coverage for metro Detroiters, although keeping it for others. Collectively, the four insurers currently cover more than 200,000 Michiganders.

What's more, extra Affordable Care Act subsidies that made individual plans on the Healthcare.gov marketplace significantly more affordable for middle and upper middle-income earners are expiring at the end of this year, forcing some beneficiaries to pay double or triple what they do now in 2026 for health insurance.

[...] Absent an extension for the extra subsidies, Michiganders who earn more than four times the federal poverty level, or $62,600 for an individual or $128,600 for a family of four, will again need to pay full price for their ACA premiums. And that full price will be higher than ever.

State regulators recently approved new premiums for individual health plans that, on average, are going up 20% in 2026.

[...] But for current enrollees who earn above that 400% cutoff, the extra subsidies are going away and the sticker price of their 2026 plan could go up way more than 20%, perhaps doubling or tripling.

That group includes Cortney Strother, 61, of Berkley, who is a small business owner. He said he currently pays about $289 a month for his "silver" individual plan health insurance. His expanded ACA subsidy provides him a $627 tax credit. So if not for the subsidy, he would be paying the full $916 per-month cost for his plan.

[...] But last month Strother received a notice that his insurance carrier, HAP CareSource, which is a joint venture between Detroit-based Health Alliance Plan and Ohio-based CareSource, is dropping out of the individual market in 2026.

In an interview, Strother said receiving the end-of-service notice felt like "a kick to the midsection." He ordinarily buys his health insurance through an agent, and was still waiting last week to find out whether there are insurance plans for next year that he could afford.

"I've been very happy with the Affordable Care Act options in this past," Strother said, "but right now I am literally in limbo waiting to see what's going to be available. If my bills go up into that region that is close to $1,000 a month, I have no idea what I'm going to do."

[...] Annika Vanderwerf, 25, of Houghton, in the Upper Peninsula, is in sticker shock after seeing the potential costs for health insurance once the expanded subsidies disappear. Thanks to those subsidies, she currently pays under $10 a month for her individual plan, she said. So far, the least expensive plan she has seen on Healthcare.gov would cost her $380 per month.
