Foundation for Puerto Rico Focuses On Infrastructure And Economic Development Knowing There Is No Future In Rebuilding The Past

PR Newswire

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Nov. 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Foundation for Puerto Rico, the not-for-profit, non-partisan, go-to, give-to foundation on the ground in Puerto Rico, is driving smart infrastructure change with a focus on spurring economic development to turn devastation into opportunity for a new beginning and a better future for Puerto Rico. With an intelligent eye and aggressive long-term vision, the Foundation for Puerto Rico is laying the groundwork to reform the island through immediate efforts for future growth with a focus on resiliency, sustainability and economic viability.

Foundation for Puerto Rico is driving small business stabilization through Small Business Grant Programs that are providing needed funds to local business owners including Carlos Velandia of Panuchos, pictured above receiving a check from Arnaldo Cruz from Foundation for Puerto Rico.

"There is no future in rebuilding the past," says Jon Borschow, Chairman of the Foundation for Puerto Rico. "We must focus on making Puerto Rico's infrastructure resistant to future vulnerabilities through sustainable solutions to support energy, telecommunications and small businesses, the backbone of the island's economy, to create a reformed and resilient Puerto Rico."

Serving as the credible voice of the future, The Foundation for Puerto Rico understands the island's dependency on development of new technologies and systems.  A number of initiatives are currently underway through the Foundation of Puerto Rico to drive smart infrastructure change including:

  • Small Business Grant Programs that will provide funds needed to hundreds of small business to survive and thrive with a focus on farms and businesses in the agricultural supply chain
  • New Energy Solutions and implementation of smart grid systems that will protect Puerto Rico's future livelihood from catastrophic consequences of no power
  • Development and Sponsorship of strategic investment and redevelopment initiatives in key sectors like telecommunications, public health and urban planning

As the Foundation for Puerto Rico looks to the future, concerted relief efforts simultaneously continue to address basic needs of the island and its people. Since impact of the storm, the Foundation for Puerto Rico has reached 57,500 people in 42 communities to deliver 13,500 gallons of drinking water, served as a certified fiscal agent to help other non-profit entities ensure donations were handled properly, provided 100 high-capacity water filtration systems to key organizations in need, hosted 180 business and NGO's to provide modern office facilities, partnered with Red Cross and a major distributor to distribute 20,000 food and water packages a day and raised $2 million dollars and millions in donated goods for distribution to those who need it most.

About Foundation for Puerto Rico
Foundation for Puerto Rico (FPR) is a 501(c)(3) local non-profit incorporated in 2011 with over 15 employees. FPR's mission is to transform Puerto Rico into a premier destination for the world by developing and implementing sustainable strategies that drive the visitor economy in the island. Due to the devastating impact hurricane María had in Puerto Rico, we are shifting our usual work duties to focus on relief efforts that will boost the recovery of our island and help those in need. For the time being, our work will focus on rebuilding the island. Once this has been accomplished, we will shift back to our usual work efforts of strengthening our economy through the visitor economy.
