Because the city doesn't want to be obligated to offer insurance under the Affordable Care Act, reserve firefighters will be limited to 120 hours or less of work each month. But Sokolowski and several other firefighters said the move will not save the city any money.
Instead of using reserve crews to cover shifts, full-time career firefighters will have to be paid overtime, at a much higher rate.

Sokolowski said limiting the use of reserves is a safety issue for the public and responders. The department has 12 career firefighters, including three captains, and eight reserve crew members. Three of the reserves have already reached the limit for this month.
