Fire gutted Los Mariachis in February. What’s next for the Boise property?

May 13-- May 13--The building that was home to Los Mariachis Mexican Restaurant in Boise for many years has been boarded up since a Feb. 5 fire gutted the place.

Boise Fire Department investigators determined that the blaze started in a rear corner of the building at 6565 W. Fairview Ave., between Taco Bell and Los Betos. But they were unable to figure out what caused it.

Edith Ortega and her family operated the restaurant at the Fairview location for 17 years, she told KTVB. They also operate a restaurant in Caldwell.

They were leasing the Boise building, according to Holly Chetwood, a commercial real estate agent with Thornton Oliver Keller. The property owners, who live out of state, would like to get a new tenant before they tear the building down, Chetwood said.

Insurance will cover the cost of rebuilding if it has the same prior usage, as a restaurant. The property owners are open to other possibilities at the site.

"If a tenant wanted to do a land lease and build their own building on there, there's a wide array of options for that piece of land," Chetwood said. " It's ideal for another restaurant, but we're not limiting it to that."

One firefighter suffered a knee injury while battling the blaze, which was reported at 8:18 p.m. on Feb. 5.

Los Mariachis was open on the day of the fire, but it was closed at the time it started. No one was in the building at the time, Boise Fire spokeswoman Char Jackson told the Statesman. The fire was not considered suspicious, she said.
