Fire damages Cherokee County home

Nov. 30--CHEROKEE COUNTY -- A fundraiser has been set up for an area couple left homeless after their residence was partially destroyed by fire early Monday morning.

According to Patrick Bailey, assistant chief of Earle's Chapel Volunteer Fire Department, volunteers responded about 1:35 a.m. Nov. 26 to a fire at 340 County Road 3109, south of Lake Jacksonville.

The mobile home "was not completely damaged, but it burnt the middle of the roof in the living area, and there was a lot of smoke and water damage -- it's not considered a total loss, but it's in pretty bad shape," Bailey said.

When emergency crews arrived, they found homeowners Jason and Kristy Davis outside with their young daughter and an elderly woman, he said, adding that no injuries were reported.

Members of Earle's Chapel, Maydelle and North Cherokee Volunteer Fire departments, along with firefighters from the city of Jacksonville, responded to the scene.

"Upon our arrival it took about 45 minutes until the fire was contained," Bailey said. "We made sure everything was extinguished completely before we left, to make sure it didn't start back up."

The fire is being investigated by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

"We really didn't know what started the fire, at the point that we were there," he said.

A Facebook fundraiser created by Luann Letienne, titled "Family member lost their home to fire," seeks to raise $45,000 to help the Davis family, who had no insurance.

Letienne's post noted that the family is staying with relatives at this time.
