Fact Check: Smear Ad Misrepresents Eastman’s Stance on Healthcare Bacon Allies Use Scare Tactics to Maintain High Health Insurance Premiums, Ignoring Cost Savings of Medicare for All

OMAHA, Nebraska, Sept. 4 -- The campaign of Kara Eastman, a Democrat running for election in Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District, issued the following campaign news release:

This morning, the Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF) released a smear ad attacking Kara Eastman's support for a plan to ensure Nebraska families have the healthcare they deserve. The fact is, Republicans and Don Bacon are responsible for our broken healthcare system and refuse to fix it.

Bacon has a long history of sabotaging the Affordable Care Act-- he voted "hell yes" for a bill that would have gutted protections for pre-existing conditions, imposed an age tax on older Americans, and increased premiums on Nebraska families. In fact, the actions of Bacon and the Trump administration have led to a premium increase of approximately $6,250 for the average family of four.

The attack ad is purposefully misleading--in fact, a conservative study found that Medicare for All would actually reduce costs for many families

" Republicans and Congressman Bacon are resorting to scare tactics in order to maintain the status quo of high insurance premiums and out-of-pocket costs forpatients. Under Medicare for All, not only would all Americans have healthcare,

but there would be no insurance premiums to pay, no deductibles, no co-pays,and our nation's total health care costs would still be $2 trillion less than they are today," Eastman said. " Don Bacon has taken more than $30,000 from the pharmaceutical industry and voted for a healthcare repeal bill that would have gutted protections for pre-existing conditions, imposed an age tax, and hiked premiums on Nebraska families. When it comes to healthcare, Nebraska families can't trust Bacon or his dark money backers."
