EDITORIAL: Puerto Rico adrift: Still recovering from hurricanes, the island is bedeviled by an incompetent and shady governor
New York Daily News, The (NY)
Jul. 20--Puerto Ricans, still recovering from a hurricane that battered the island, still reeling from a string of lies and insults hurled by their president, now aim their ire at their governor.
It is impossible to see how Ricardo Rosselló can survive the daily flood of tens of thousands of people into the streets of San Juan demanding his resignation.
The immediate trigger for the uproar is the release of 889 pages of leaked chats in which Rosselló insulted his rivals and his constituents to a band of insiders.
A politician with a reputation for competence could survive the blowback.
But this is the governor who awarded a $300 million contract to help restore power to a Montana company with no experience in disaster zones. Who botched piece after piece of the hurricane recovery. Who was at the top of the political food chain while two other officials allegedly directed more than $15 million in contracts to connected businesses.
If Rosselló goes, President Trump, who has missed no opportunity to call the island a backwater, will surely crow. Forget him. Worry about the people.
