Does Dental Insurance Cover Cosmetic Procedures?

Newswire.com
NEW YORK - November 11, 2021 - (Newswire.com)

iQuanti: Dental insurance can cover some or all of the costs associated with restorative procedures. Meanwhile, most dental insurance companies classify cosmetic procedures as elective. As such, they do not usually cover costs associated with cosmetic dental treatments.

If you have dental insurance and want a cosmetic treatment, help is available. And if you want to move forward with a cosmetic dental procedure, you can determine the best course of action to pay for it.

What Is a Cosmetic Dental Procedure?

A cosmetic dental procedure is performed solely to enhance a patient's smile. Examples of cosmetic dental procedures include:

  • Dental Implants: Titanium replacement roots that provide the foundation for a missing tooth.
  • Teeth Whitening: Products that bleach the teeth and bolster their appearance.
  • Veneers: Custom-made shells that are bonded to the front of the teeth and change their color, shape, size, and length.

In general, cosmetic dental procedures are not considered medically necessary if the tooth or tissue is not injured, impaired, or decayed.

What Is the Difference Between a Cosmetic and Restorative Dental Procedure?

A restorative dental procedure is considered medically necessary if a patient experiences tooth or gum issues caused by decay, disease, accident, or injury. There may be times when a dental procedure is considered both cosmetic and restorative, too.

For instance, an individual can lose teeth due to an accident. In this instance, a restorative dental procedure can be used to replace a patient's missing teeth. The procedure is also considered cosmetic, since it improves the patient's smile.

How Can I Find Out If a Dental Procedure Is Cosmetic or Restorative?

Consult with your dental insurance provider to learn about your coverage. Your insurer can offer insights into dental procedures covered under your plan.

How Can I Pay for a Cosmetic Dental Procedure Not Covered by Insurance?

Several financing options are available to those who want to receive a cosmetic dental procedure not covered by insurance. These include:

Health Savings Account (HSA)

An HSA lets you set aside money for qualified medical expenses, tax-free. You can use HSA funds for dental expenses not covered by insurance. But there can be restrictions, depending on the cosmetic procedure.

Healthcare Credit Card

CareCredit and other healthcare credit cards can provide immediate financing for a cosmetic dental procedure. Healthcare credit cards can offer short- and long-term financing options. Some of these cards offer a 0% interest introductory period, but if you're unable to pay off the card before the interest-free period expires, you may encounter a steep interest rate.

Pursuing a Cosmetic Dental Procedure

Cosmetic dental procedures can have long-lasting effects on your smile. The procedures are typically not covered by dental insurance, but financing options are available.

Consult with your dentist to find out if you qualify for a cosmetic procedure and how it can help you improve your smile. Then, evaluate your dental insurance coverage. And if you move forward with a cosmetic dental procedure, you can pursue financing for your desired treatment.
