DIFS RECOMMENDS MICHIGANDERS REVIEW THEIR INSURANCE POLICIES DURING READING MONTH

States News Service

The following information was released by the Michigan State Government:

March is Reading Month and the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) recommends Michiganders carefully review their insurance policies with a licensed insurance agent or trusted advisor, and to shop around to ensure they have the protection that best meets their families' needs and budgets.

"It is crucial that Michiganders regularly read their insurance policies so that they understand their coverage and can be prepared for the unexpected," said DIFS Director Anita Fox. "Reviewing policies and shopping around can ensure you have the insurance coverage that best fits your family's needs and budget. A licensed insurance agent can help guide you through the process, and DIFS is ready to assist Michiganders with questions about their insurance policy options and can be reached Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 877-999-6442, or by visiting Michigan.gov/DIFS."

Insurance affects nearly every aspect of life for Michigan consumers, making it essential for Michiganders to understand their policies to ensure they fit their needs. During Reading Month, Michiganders should be sure to review their insurance policies, including:

Homeowners and Renters Insurance: A thorough review of your homeowners or renters insurance policy will help you to understand your existing coverage. Shop around for insurance options that provide coverage for you and your family that meets your needs and budget. Make sure your deductible fits comfortably within your budget, as this is the amount of money you are responsible for paying before your insurance pays for a covered claim. You can find more information on homeowners and renters insurance basics on our webpage on homeowners insurance.

Auto Insurance: It is important to ensure you are adequately covered in the event of an auto accident. This means reviewing your current coverages, including collision and comprehensive, to ensure you have the coverage that best meets your needs. Consumers should shop around to compare costs from different insurers to find the right coverage for their family and budget. In addition, it is important to confirm that any insured who opts out of or is excluded from Personal Injury Protection (PIP) medical coverage ha the required Qualified Health Coverage (QHC). Otherwise, they may be left without any medical coverage in the event of an auto accident. Additional information is available at Michigan.gov/AutoInsurance.

Life insurance: Life insurance can help provide peace of mind that your loved ones will have the financial resources necessary to pay daily bills or cover end-of-life expenses if tragedy strikes. Life insurance may also be a key component of a family's strategy for long-term financial or retirement planning, paying for college, and building generational wealth. Publications, tips, locators, and other information about shopping for life insurance or annuities in Michigan can be found on the DIFS Life and Annuities website.

Consumers should reach out to their insurance company or agent for help with their existing insurance policies. Consumers can find a licensed insurance agent or agency by using the DIFS Licensee Locator Tool. Using DIFS' Licensee Locator tool allows consumers to verify that they are dealing with properly licensed individuals and agencies in the insurance industry.

Consumers can also contact DIFS for assistance, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 877-999-6442 or Michigan.gov/DIFS.

The mission of the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services is to ensure access to safe and secure insurance and financial services fundamental for the opportunity, security, and success of Michigan residents, while fostering economic growth and sustainability in both industries. In addition, the Department provides consumer protection, outreach, and financial literacy and education services to Michigan residents. For more information, visit Michigan.gov/DIFS or follow the Department on Facebook, X, or LinkedIn.
