Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee: 3 Years After Failed Repeal Vote, Senate Republicans Are Still Trying To Take Away Your Health Care

WASHINGTON, July 29 -- The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee issued the following news release:

Three years after Senate Republicans tried -- and failed -- to repeal the Affordable Care Act and gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions, vulnerable GOP senators and candidates are still trying to eliminate health care coverage -- even during a pandemic and despite the fact that their records are deeply unpopular with voters across the country.

Not only are Republican incumbents on the record voting to eliminate the health care law without providing a feasible alternative, they all voted for the GOP tax bill that sparked their party's lawsuit to end protections for pre-existing conditions. Not a single GOP senator has taken meaningful steps to stop this dangerous legal attack from plowing forward to the Supreme Court amid a public health crisis. Throughout this pandemic, Republicans have kept special enrollment for the ACA's health exchange closed, an "unpopular" move as millions have lost coverage due to this crisis.

And last year, vulnerable incumbents including Senators McSally, Gardner, Daines, Perdue, Ernst, Tillis, and Cornyn all voted again to defend the expansion of junk insurance plans that "force many to pay for lifesaving treatments," "often exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions," and "charge women more for the same coverage."

"In the three years since their infamous failed effort to repeal the health care law, Senate Republicans have doubled down on their relentless crusade to rip away protections for people with pre-existing conditions and kick millions off their insurance," said DSCC spokesperson Helen Kalla. "Instead of coming clean on their agenda to gut health care in exchange for tax breaks for their wealthy donors, Senate Republicans have been lying to voters about their toxic records trying to take away pre-existing conditions protections. At a time when access to affordable health care is more important than ever, voters will remember how Republican senators never gave up on their push to increase their costs and take away their coverage."
