Coronavirus: What you need to know for Friday

Coronavirus has arrived in Jacksonville.

The Florida Department of Health announced late Thursday at least 17 new positive COVID-19 cases in the state, including one in Duval County and one in Clay County.

The Duval case is an 83-year-old male and the Clay County case is a 57-year-old male. It's unclear if either case was travel-related at this time. Both men are isolated. Epidemiological investigations are still ongoing for both cases, the department said in a news release.

Other new cases confirmed by the state Department of Health include:

2 in Palm Beach

2 in Sarasota

1 in Hillsborough

1 in Lee

1 in Alachua

1 in Volusia

1 in Miami-Dade

Players Championship canceled after one round

The PGA Tour announced late Thursday that it was canceling the remaining three rounds of The Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass Players Stadium Course due to coronavirus concerns.

The Tour played the first round on Thursday with fans present, with an announcement at noon that it would play the next three rounds without fans.

Other major league sports delayed, suspended or canceled activities, including MLB NHL and MLS.

And a day after saying it would play March Madness tournament games without fans, the NCAA canceled the tournament altogether.

Jacksonville's minor league baseball team, the Jumbo Shrimp, announced it, too, would delay start of the baseball season.

Jacksonville mayor says city prepared, urges preventative measures

Mayor Lenny Curry urged residents on Thursday to take preventive measures, such as washing their hands and avoiding contact with other people, and to report symptoms to a doctor or the local office of the Florida Department of Health before seeking care to avoid potentially spreading the virus.

Curry said during a press conference that the Department of Health is administering tests but that he didn't know how many tests had been performed in Duval County. He pledged to share all information, including news of any positive tests in the city, as soon as his office receives it.

"We're prepared, and we're going to share information as we get it," Curry said. | Read more

Jacksonville-area schools plan to be open on Monday

As crews in white trucks exit newly sanitized elementary, middle and high schools in Duval County, teachers and students will return Monday morning.

Duval County Public Schools confirmed that after spring break -- which lasts through March 13 -- all K-12 schools will resume, with schedules unaffected by the coronavirus.

This follows a week-long process the district underwent to disinfect and sanitize all schools with viral disinfectants. Bulk amounts of hand sanitizer has also been distributed to each campus. | Read more

The Jaguars have suspended all travel indefinitely for their coaches and scouts.

And though the franchise and Bold Events remain open for business, employees have been encouraged to work from home.

The Jaguars said in a statement that private events and concerts at Daily's Place and fan events are being carefully evaluated on a case-by-case basis. | Read more

Stopping visitors at nursing homes is now the new normal

The state has ordered long-term care facilities to block people from visiting residents if they've recently traveled abroad, been on a cruise ship or been in contact with someone who has the coronavirus, or COVID-19.

Some have gone a significant step forward and stopped virtually all in-person visits from family members and friends until the threat has passed.

Cypress Village, just west of the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, has stopped most visitations at its assisted-living and memory centers and at its skilled nursing facility. | Read more

Rick Scott self-quarantines, Trump and Pence, 'not concerned'

Everyone from the nation's top elected officials to the people raiding grocery store shelves spent much of Thursday considering how much contact is too much contact with someone who is infected or the masses that might be.

President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence announced they were taking a pass on self-isolation or getting tested for the virus that is sweeping the nation a man now diagnosed with COVID-19 was side-by-side with them at Mar-a-Largo Saturday evening.

In contrast, Sen. Rick Scott, as well as the mayors of Miami and Miami-Dade County decided traveling in those same circles that evening was enough for them to limit their social interaction. | Read more

Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando theme parks to close through March

Magic Kingdom and other Walt Disney World theme parks will shut their gates for the rest of March starting Sunday night, Disney announced. Moments later, Universal Orlando Resort announced the same fate for its theme parks.

Following closures of Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood in California due to the coronavirus, the Walt Disney Company announced later the same day that theme parks at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Paris would follow suit.

The Orlando parks will close at the end of the day Sunday and remain closed until the end of the month. Hotels, retail and dining areas will remain open.

Cruise industry to develop new coronavirus protocols within 72 hours

Vice President Mike Pence concluded on Saturday his second visit to South Florida in about a week by announcing new cruise ship coronavirus-related guidelines are in the works.

After a roundtable discussion with government cruise company CEOs at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Pence said that within 72 hours new screening and quarantine protocols will be in place.

Off the table, however, are any plans to cancel or discourage healthy Americans from taking a cruise. But one cruise line did tell passengers they could cancel cruises and receive a "full refund in the form of a future credit" for a voyage. | Read more

Clay County Agricultural Fair canceled

Because of the new coronavirus, the Clay County Agricultural Fair has been canceled for the first time in its 34-year history.

The 2020 event was to be held April 2 to 11. Calling it off was devastating for organizers, with hundreds of exhibits planned and attendance expected to top the 130,000 guests who showed up last year.

"This was the hardest decision for our board to make," said General Manager Tasha Hyde, "but ultimately the health and safety of our community, attendees, partners and volunteers are of the utmost importance."
