WASHINGTON, April 13 -- Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., issued the following news release:
Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) released the following statement in response to President Donald Trump'sWall Street Journal interview where he threatened to withhold payments to insurers in order to force Democrats to the negotiating table on the Affordable Care Act:
"President Trump's recent comments that he is considering stopping critical cost-sharing subsidies for insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a disturbing admission that he is totally willing to risk the lives of millions of Americans to 'win' some reality show," said Congressman Nadler. "Health care is not a game; it is not some gaudy real estate deal. Health care is a matter of life and death for millions of Americans who rely on these subsidies to cover out-of-pocket expenses when they and their families are sick. The fact that Donald Trump is willing to use American lives as some sort of bargaining chip to force Democratic Members of Congress to the table--a table that even Republicans are abandoning--is disgraceful. If the President wants to bring Democrats to the table, he needs to drop this absurd and dangerous effort to repeal the ACA and start producing real ideas for strengthening and improving the law."
