Committee to Mark Up Legislation to Strengthen Career and Technical Education, Discuss Regulatory Barriers to Retirement Security

The House Committee on Education and the Workforce, chaired by Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), will meet this week to mark up H.R. 2353, the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act. Additionally, the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions, chaired by Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI), will hold a hearing to examine regulatory barriers facing workers and families saving for retirement. Both the markup and the hearing will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

* On Wednesday, May 17 at 10:00 a.m., the committee will mark up the Strengthening Career and Technical Education Act (H.R. 2353). Introduced by Reps. Glenn "GT" Thompson (R-PA) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), the bill will reauthorize the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act and will help more students gain the knowledge and skills they need to compete for in-demand jobs. The bipartisan proposal is largely identical to legislation the House passed in September 2016 by an overwhelming vote of 405 to 5.

* On Thursday, May 18 at 10:00 a.m., the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions will examine regulatory barriers impacting the retirement security of workers and families, such as the flawed fiduciary rule and unnecessary restrictions on multiple employer plans. Members will discuss the need to protect access to affordable retirement advice and empower small businesses to offer retirement plans to their employees.
