Citrus County woman left without insurance after being dropped
NBC - 8 WFLA (Tampa, FL)
CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) -- Florida homeowners are still getting hammered by rising insurance rates and some people are getting their policies dropped altogether.
That's what prompted a Citrus County woman to reach out to 8 On Your Side for answers.
Nikki Hagan loves spending time on the porch with her dog Casper.
She said the last eight years in her Beverly Hills home have been peaceful, but over the weekend she received an unwelcome surprise.
"My insurance is not going to be renewed," Hagan said. "They sent me a non-renewal. It gives you no reason and then you have to go through all the back doors to find out if there is a reason."
Hagan said she never filed a claim, and her roof was recently replaced.
She called her insurance company to try and get answers, but the non-renewal still stands.
"It's a hard pill to take," said Ron Assise, an insurance broker at The Horton Group. "When you might not have any claims and your house may be newer."
Assise said the recent hurricanes and high cost of litigation have been a catalyst for insurance companies to issue non-renewal notices.
"That's simply the insurance company's way of saying that they feel they have too many exposures in a given area," Assise said. "They're taking action to not renew some of their clients in that area to reduce that excess exposure."
However, insurers are required to issue a notice at least 45 days before the policy expires.
"It's a serious thing," Assise said. "Start reaching out to other providers as soon as possible."
