May 6—HIGH POINT — A High Point man was charged in a fatal wreck Sunday night on Johnson Street in which police say his car reached speeds up to 82 mph just before hitting another vehicle near the Oakview Drive intersection.
The wreck just before 11:55 p.m. in the 3500 block of Johnson Street killed Gwon Yong Hwan, 70, of High Point.
An investigation concluded that Raeshaun S. Smith, 32, driving a Chevrolet Camaro, was speeding on Johnson Street after exiting Interstate 74 when his car collided with Hwan's 2014 Honda Accord, the High Point Police Department reports. Hwan was pulling out of the Korean American Presbyterian Church of Greater Greensboro.
After hitting Hwan's car, Smith ran to his home several blocks away. He eventually returned to the scene of the wreck and told officers that he was the Camaro's driver, police said.
Smith was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, operating a vehicle with no insurance, failure to wear a seat belt, felony hit and run causing serious injury or death, driving a motor vehicle with no registration and speeding.
Bond was set at $50,000 unsecured and Smith later was released, according to police.
