CAP receives flood relief funding

May 30-- May 30--Community Action Partnership of Greater St. Joseph has received $88,000 from the Missouri Housing Development Commission for storm and flood relief.

CAP was notified of the award's availability last Thursday and had to respond by Friday. With help from city and county officials who promptly provided needed statistical data, the agency was able to get he application processed in less than 24 hours.

"I worked closely with the city of St. Joseph, Bruce Woody, Andy Clements his team, the mayor got in touch with everyone we needed to talk to about how many people in St. Joseph were affected by the flooding, and they had a listing of those residents," Whitney Lanning CAP executive director said. "And then, County Commissioner Ron Hook did an amazing job getting the data for us as well, so all in all it looks like it's a little over 75 households that were affected by the flooding."

Lanning added there was $300,000 in funding available, and CAP was able to receive almost a third of that amount.

"The money will be available to us this week and we'll be able to start working with the city and the county to identify those individuals that need assistance," Lanning said.

The money is specifically designated to those who have been affected by storms and flooding in the area.

"We'll be working with those individuals to make sure that if they have housing needs -- it's all for housing needs -- if they have utility issues, if they have housing repairs not covered by insurance or if they didn't have insurance, those are the type of things we can help them with," Lanning said.

She added that $88,000 in the grand scheme of the damage that's been done is not a huge amount, but it will help some people.

"It really shows taxpayers and voters that we have people here that are dedicated to serving their needs," Lanning said.
