Sept. 14--A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with Tuesday's single-car crash where a woman was killed and a child critically injured.
Travis Brownlee has been charged with vehicular homicide, aggravated assault, driving on a suspended license, reckless driving and no car insurance.
Police said the accident happened around 12:24 p.m. at Shelby Drive and Gill Road.
Investigators said Brownlee lost control of his 2007 Cheverolet HHR and hit a utility pole as he headed east on Shelby Drive. He then drove into a drainage ditch, according to an arrest affidavit.
Tequoia Scales, a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead on the scene. A girl was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in critical condition.
Brownlee was taken to the Regional Medical Center in noncritical condition.
He was later arrested and charged under the Ricky Otts law, a 2012 measure that requires police to arrest drivers involved in serious accidents who don't have a valid driver's license and proof of insurance.
Brownlee will be in court Friday on the charges.
