Aug. 14--A skate park on 18th Street near Chickasha High School has seen its last grind.
"Chickasha Schools received notification from our property and liability insurance provider. In a letter, the insurance company stated that, 'We believe the skate park creates an unnecessary risk to the school district' ... 'The liability coverage provided through the Oklahoma Schools Risk Management Trust does not anticipate or expect exposure to this type of hazard and we must ask that it be removed," a release from Chickasha Public Schools stated.
The skate park has been a staple of the area for the better part of a decade. The ramps and equipment were offered to the City of Chickasha for relocation, but the city declined, according to the release.
"We have begun to look at other options, but we haven't explored anything officially," Chickasha City Manager, John Noblitt said.
The Chickasha Public Schools release expressed dismay over the loss of the park.
" We are disheartened by this turn of events, but because we could potentially lose our property and liability insurance, the skate park will be dismantled immediately," the release stated.
Chickasha Public School starts classes on Thursday, Aug. 17.
