Bonners Ferry man arrested in connection with arson at St. Ann’s Catholic Church

The church, which had recently been renovated, was attended by about 150 families. The congregation initially used the nearby United Methodist church for worship but now meets in three trailers pushed together, said the Rev. Carlos Perez.
Perez said he was gratified to hear about the arrest. "As a priest I feel compassion for that guy," he said. "I think he has to pay for his mistake."
The church received
"Really we need the church badly," he said. "We need the space for religious education, our meetings and worship. The trailer is good but not great."
Investigators determined that the fire was set in three places in the church's basement. The fire happened less than two months after St. Ann's and
Rucker, who has a lengthy criminal history, has long been considered a person of interest in the case.
Until recently he was in jail on burglary charges. He has cases pending for possession of a controlled substance and violation of a domestic violence protection order.
