Biden’s Fundraising Machine Raked In $81M In May For Best Month
Joe Biden’s bringing home some serious bacon.
Biden’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee jointly raked in $80.8 million in May, marking their best fundraising month of the 2020 election cycle.
More than half of May’s donations came from new supporters, with an average contribution of $30, according to a Monday statement from the Biden campaign.
“I’m humbled and honored that you have put your trust in me as your presumptive Democratic nominee. And I’m incredibly honored by the support I’ve received from you all,” Biden wrote in an email to supporters. “Just a few months ago, people were ready to write this campaign off. Now, we are making huge dents in Donald Trump’s war-chest. Every single dollar is going to make sure he is only a one-term president.”
Biden’s best fundraising month prior to Monday’s numbers was April, when his campaign and the DNC brought in about $60 million between them.
President Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee jointly raised about $62 million in April.
Trump’s May fundraising figures were not available Monday, and a spokeswoman for his campaign did not return a request for comment.
Biden’s fundraising surge comes even as the U.S. economy remains in dire straits because of the coronavirus pandemic, with millions of Americans out of work and businesses shuttered.
Coupled with national unrest over police brutality, Trump’s poll numbers have plummeted in recent weeks.
According to a national CNN survey released last week, Trump trails Biden by a whopping 14% among registered voters.
The Trump campaign called that poll “phony” and demanded a retraction. However, the campaign did not explain what was incorrect about the poll, and CNN says it stands by its projections.
