July 06--Cleanup was underway at BAM Style salon in Duluth Heights on Sunday, a day after a car crashed through the store's front window.
"It's a disaster," co-owner Boris Nektalov said of the salon at 133 E. Central Entrance. "It's in pretty bad shape."
A Chevrolet Impala plunged through the front window about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, damaging the lobby, front desk and ceiling, as well as knocking out the computer system and continuing on through another wall and into the stylist stations behind it.
No one was in the salon at the time.
Insurance adjusters will be out today to estimate the damages, but Nektalov expects costs to exceed $50,000.
Neither the 21-year-old female driver nor her 45-year-old female passenger was injured, according to Duluth police.
It was an accident, Nektalov said, adding that the young driver was arriving for her job at Papa John's Pizza next door and was new to driving.
"It could have happened to anyone," he said, holding no ill will against her.
"I'm assuming they have insurance, and their insurance will take care of it," Nektalov said. "I'm hoping if their insurance doesn't take care of it, they have to figure out a way to take care of it."
The damage will close the salon for between two weeks and two months, he said, putting his 12 employees out of work for a while.
Nektalov said he hoped the insurance companies would consider lost wages.
Plans had been to open the salon on Saturday, but the owners changed their minds at the last minute.
"I'm glad we did," Nektalov said.
