AM Best to Discuss Canada Insurance Market Analysis, Record Catastrophe Year and Life/Annuity Premium Growth at Toronto Briefing

AM Best will host an insurance market briefing on the state of Canada’s insurance industry at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2025.

During the complimentary half-day event, AM Best analysts will deliver market insights and present overviews of Canada’s main insurance sectors, including discussion of emerging trends such as catastrophe losses, climate risk mitigation, cyber and artificial intelligence, and updates around the IFRS 17 accounting practices.

Sessions during the event include:

  • AM Best's Canadian Market Outlooks: Insured losses in 2024 notched the costliest year on record with wildfires and flooding pushing catastrophe-related claims to CAD 9.0 billion. AM Best analysts will provide an economic overview, as well as analysis of the performance of Canada’s property/casualty and life/annuity lines of business with outlooks for the coming year.

  • A panel discussion on emerging issues will address recent regulatory changes, the macroenvironment, cyber coverage and the rise of private credit. Panelists will include Gord Dowhan, chief financial officer, Wawanesa Insurance; Jacqueline Friedland, executive director, Risk Assessment and Intervention Hub, Office of Superintendent of Financial Institutions; and Steve Guignard, senior director, Client Solutions, Sun Life Capital Management.
