Addiction Treatment Advocacy Coalition is Formed

Business Wire

Non-profit will advocate for the 21.5 million Americans with Substance Use Disorder

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Addiction Treatment Advocacy Coalition (ATAC) (www.ATAC.org) is a newly formed non-profit organization based in Los Angeles that will provide political and legal advocacy, education and consumer protection on behalf of the more than 21.5 million Americans who suffer from Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Founded by a group of California addiction treatment facilities, ATAC’s membership also includes psychiatrists, clinical therapists and others interested in the advancement of addiction treatment in the United States.

Given that in 2015 only 2.5 million of those with SUD sought help at a licensed addiction treatment facility, ATAC will soon launch a campaign later this year to raise public awareness about SUD and its treatment options. ATAC believes that it is essential that patients not only have access to affordable, quality care, but that insurance companies recognize that they are legally required to handle this behavioral health issue in the same way that they handle physical ailments.

“Substance Use Disorder is on the rise in the United States,” stated Stampp Corbin, ATAC Board President, “yet most people don’t realize that their insurance policies offer the very coverage that they need to get help. ATAC will work with licensed treatment facilities to educate their communities on how to identify and access available treatment resources.”

“The addiction treatment industry must advocate zealously on behalf of its patients to ensure that they are getting the best care possible,” stated Joan Borsten, ATAC Board Vice President. “We must recognize that each individual’s path to recovery from SUD is unique and that getting help from a licensed treatment facility is just the beginning of modifying life-threatening behaviors. Our goal is to help SUD patients achieve and maintain long-term sobriety.”
