Enrollment for 2023 health insurance through the Affordable Care Act Marketplace ends Sunday.
Local, free in-person help is available to explain options and assist with applying.
"We have in-person help at the MP office in Sylva – two counselors and one speaks Spanish," said Angeline Schwab, speaking for Mountain Projects. "We have in-person counselors in the seven western counties. If someone needs an online meeting or needs staff to come to their homes, they will do that, too."
The program signs up 1,200 people per year on a regional basis, Schwab said.
There are dozens of choices of insurance companies to choose from, she said. There are nine plans available in this region, but up to 126 options to review.
The counselors are familiar with these and are available on a year-round basis to help resolve issues in the healthcare maze.
"Appointments take about an hour, but clients will call counselors to ask questions through the year, including issues with claims and problems with denials," Schwab said.
Depending on household size and projected household income for 2023, residents might qualify for premium tax credits that lower the out-of-pocket premium costs. Many people can find plans with out-of-pocket premiums that range from $50 to as low as $0 per month
Appointments are available in person or over the phone by calling Mountain Projects at 452-1447 or Pisgah Legal Services at 210-3404.
This project is supported by the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust and the Dogwood Health Foundation.
