Woman’s car stolen and burned

The Moultrie Observer, Ga.
By The Moultrie Observer, Ga.
McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

April 15--MOULTRIE -- It's got to be on a car owner's list of nightmares.

About 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, Mary Lou Smithwick got a knock on her door on Highway 133 South. It was a Colquitt County deputy.

"Ma'am, do you know where your vehicle is?" he asked.

"It's in the driveway."

"No, it isn't."

In fact, the deputy told her, the 2004 Dodge Durango was found, abandoned and on fire, in a ditch on Toney Brothers Road near Old Albany Road. A passing motorist had called 911 about the apparent wreck.

No one was found near the car, and Colquitt County sheriff's investigators are working on the case.

Smithwick told the deputy she may have left the keys in the SUV. She said the vehicle contained a diaper bag with her wallet and her identification cards, as well as car seats for her children.

The vehicle itself was valued at $6,800.
