Wolf Campaign revisits Garden City

Kelton Brooks, The Garden City Telegram, Kan.
By Kelton Brooks, The Garden City Telegram, Kan.
McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

July 23--As Milton Wolf stood amongst possible voters and his campaign team Wednesday morning at Hanna's Corner Restaurant, he quoted a retired neurosurgeon, awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush in 2008, to describe the best candidate for office.

"Like Dr. Ben Carson said, we should elect more doctors and engineers because they know how to solve problems. We need to elect less lawyers because they know how to win arguments. We need more problem solvers, not arguers," Wolf said.

A handful of people surrounded the Republican candidate, who is running for U.S. Senate against longtime Sen. Pat Roberts -- knife and fork in hand as they prepared for their meal and to ingest the message delivered by Wolf.

"I've been all over Kansas now -- all corners of the state, every county -- to reach anybody who will listen to our message that America is in big trouble. We have to change our ways. We're not going to change Washington unless we change who we send to Washington," he said.

Wolf is on a 15-day bus tour trying to become the candidate sent to Washington, making 50 stops all around the state.

The candidate, who is opposing Roberts in the August primary on the Republican ticket, addressed many concerns, offered alternatives and responded to negative scrutiny against him.

One alternative he raised is his health care plan, PatientCare, which is what he would put in place of Obamacare. He said PatientCare is centered around patients rather than politicians, and will put patients, doctors and nurses in charge of the country's health care system instead of politicians and bureaucrats.

He also addressed an agriculture issue, saying the present farm bills aren't exactly farm bills, but food stamp bills. He added that farmers are held hostage by government regulations.

And when it comes to farming, Wolf said that's an area where Roberts cannot personally associate.

"Between Pat Roberts and myself, only one of us has actually farmed, and it ain't the guy who has been in Washington 47 years," he said. "I grew up in Lyons County, and the Wolf family is a dairy farming family. I'll never betray the family farmers in Kansas. It's my own family, and I take it personally."

Wolf reiterated that he is a doctor, not a politician, but cited a big difference between his and Robert's campaign, saying he runs a campaign about positive conservative solutions, while Roberts is running a campaign of attack ads.

"I've never said a personal, disparaging thing about Pat Roberts. I'm tired of attack politics. Instead, I've been offering solutions," he said.

Although, Wolf came under fire when he posted photos of wounded and dead patients on his personal Facebook page in 2010 with a caption that read: "What kind of gun blows somebody's head completely off? I've got to get one of those."

The post was reported in February by The Topeka Capital-Journal, and the Kansas Board of Healing Arts is investigating the matter. The exact nature of the complaint against Wolf has not been made publicly available, but confirmation of the investigation emerged in correspondence between the Topeka CapitalJournal and KBHA. See the accompanying story for more details.

Wolf has since taken down the photos.

"I hope they would (investigate) to be quite honest because the things they are accusing me of are serious, but they're false," Wolf said. "The board is obligated to investigate every complaint that comes into their office, and I think they should, and they'll find what we already know, that I have not violated any patient privacy."

Wolf characterizes the investigation as a tactic unveiled by Pat Roberts two weeks before the election because he's "desperate."

He said that to his knowledge, no patient of his has complained about privacy, and he added that the complaints made to the state board were not from his patients, but by political opportunists.

"He can't explain his accomplishments, he can't find a single issue that he thinks I'm wrong on, and so, instead, he attacks me personally," he said.

A civil suit was filed against a radiology firm that Wolf is a partner of in 2010 concerning possible charges of illegal price fixing, but Wolf said he wasn't named in the suit and doctors can't personally fix prices.

"Doctors don't determine the prices. It's the insurance companies and Medicare that determines the prices. It's a nuisance lawsuit from a doctor who was in our group that was fired for incompetence against people in our group that I'm not involved in. I wasn't even named in that lawsuit," he said.

Wolf continued to shake hands and converse with the attendees at his visit, telling them how he plans to lead if he reaches the Senate.

He told everyone in the crammed room of Hanna's Corner, "It's time."

"It's nothing personal with Pat Roberts, but after 47 years in our country, particularly Washington, we know we have to do something about it. It's time."
