Utne Reader Honors Top Publications at 22nd Annual Independent Press Awards

Utne Reader, the best of the alternative press, last night presented nine publications with Utne Independent Press Awards for outstanding journalism in 2010. The winners were announced at a ceremony during the MPA’s Independent Magazine Advisory Group (IMAG) conference at the W San Francisco Hotel.

Mother Jones won the night’s highest honor, the General Excellence award. Utne Reader’s editors cited Mother Jones’ ability to cover the big stories and hit them hard. In 2010 the 35-year-old bimonthly covered the BP cover-up, the world’s population crisis, Big Pharma, the United States’ “age of treason,” and the attack on the middle class.

The Utne Independent Press Awards recognize the excellence and vitality of alternative and independent publishing.
