International Business Machines Assigned Patent for Analysis of Energy-related Factors for Selecting Computational Job Locations

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 29 -- International Business Machines, Armonk, N.Y., has been assigned a patent (8,086,544) developed by five co-inventors for an "analysis of energy-related factors for selecting computational job locations." The co-inventors are Gregory J. Boss, American Fork, Utah, James R. Doran, New Milford, Conn., Rick A. Hamilton II, Charlottesville, Va., Steven V. Jackson, Yardley, Pa., and Anne R. Sand, Peyton, Colo.

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "The selection of an optimal data center location for running a computational workload is based on multiple energy criteria. The location is chosen based on multivariate and predictive analysis of total direct and indirect energy costs, and other user-defined factors. Among the direct and indirect costs are power costs and cooling costs as well as structural and other details of a given data center. Among the other factors to be considered that can have an impact on present and future costs are weather patterns, data and forecasts, availability of energy providers, and energy attributes. A forecaster factors these direct and indirect costs along with extrinsic information such as historical trends and predictive sources into a forecast which is then input to a decision engine along with user defined criteria and with anticipated compute tasks and requirements to select a final location or locations for handling the workload."

The patent application was filed on Sept. 3, 2008 (12/203,345). The full-text of the patent can be found at http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=8,086,544.PN.&OS=PN/8,086,544&RS=PN/8,086,544

Product Spring, Taylored Concepts Assigned Patent

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 29 -- Product Spring, New Canaan, Conn., and Taylored Concepts, Chatham, N.J., have been assigned a patent (8,086,494) developed by Christopher P. Dooley, New Canaan, Conn., Paul S. Nielsen, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Loren Taylor, Chatham, N.J., for a "system and method for an electronic gift key."

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "A system and method for a physically-based gift key enabling a purchaser to deliver a single, fully-integrated gift item to a recipient and including an electronic greeting card and store credits redeemable online is presented. The method includes the steps of activating a gift key, customizing an electronic greeting card associated with the gift key at a host site via physical or wireless linkage of a gift key to a first local computer, accessing the greeting card at the host site via linkage of the gift key to a second local computer, and redeeming a store credit associated with the gift key at a retail website accessible from the host site. The system includes a gift key and a host computer system directly or indirectly controlling a host site. The gift key has a housing, an integrated circuit within the housing, and a connector or wireless interface extending from the housing so as to allow linkage of the gift key with a computer remotely located with respect to the host and retailer sites. The local computer automatically launches a website at the host or retailer levels when the gift key is linked to the local computer."

The patent application was filed on Aug. 15, 2008 (12/192,445). The full-text of the patent can be found at http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=8,086,494.PN.&OS=PN/8,086,494&RS=PN/8,086,494

Hartford Fire Insurance Assigned Patent

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 29 -- Hartford Fire Insurance, Hartford, Conn., has been assigned a patent (8,086,512) developed by Jason Scott Frain, East Granby, Conn., and Diane Toby Gallo, Cheshire, Conn., for a "system and method for scheduling asset allocation."

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "A distributed asset allocation processing system performs a computerized method for allocating subscriber assets. The system configures predetermined investment allocation paths that relate asset allocation models to trigger events. The system then selects a predetermined path based on a subscriber's risk tolerance. At each trigger event along the predetermined path, the system automatically rebalances the subscriber's assets according to an asset allocation model corresponding to the trigger event."

The patent application was filed on Dec. 19, 2007 (11/959,933). The full-text of the patent can be found at http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=8,086,512.PN.&OS=PN/8,086,512&RS=PN/8,086,512
