Theft, shooting leaves family in need of transportation [The Tribune-Star, Terre Haute, Ind.]

Dec. 15--WEST TERRE HAUTE -- A West Terre Haute man is seeking help to replace his automobile, after it was stolen Tuesday and riddled with bullet holes in a police-action shooting across from Maryvale Apartments near St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.

Shane Rose said Wednesday his green 1998 Hyundai was stolen from his front yard in the 100 block of Miller Avenue in West Terre Haute. It was later involved in a pursuit that ended in the shooting death of James Michael Mundy, 29, of West Terre Haute. Police say Mundy was trying to run over an officer with the stolen two-door car

Rose's vehicle was taken by Indiana State Police after Mundy's body was removed from it.

"The state police told me I could pick it up [Wednesday], but it is soaked with blood and full of bullet holes. I don't want to drive my kids in a car that someone was killed in," Rose said.

"I had insurance, but because it was an older car, it was just liability. I am in a bad situation now, especially at Christmas time. I am trying to get something that I can drive to work and around. I have some people helping me by taking me to work and back," but said that is a temporary situation, Rose said.

"It was all I had," Rose said, adding he plans to see if he can sell the vehicle to a junk yard in hopes of regaining some money.

"I am not sure if [Mundy, suspected of stealing the car,] found my spare set of keys or somehow hot-wired it. It was a stick, so it could have been rolled it to start it," Rose said.

Rose contacted Sister Dorothy Rasche of Sisters of Providence for assistance. Rasche said she made telephone calls in hopes of finding a vehicle for Rose, who works at a concrete company in Terre Haute

"He needs a vehicle," Rasche said. Rose has five children, four living at home. Rasche said anyone willing to assist Rose should contact her at (812) 533-4403.
