School hockey: Barnstable girls win unbeaten battle [Cape Cod Times, Hyannis, Mass.]

Dec. 29--HYANNIS -- Barnstable won the battle of unbeatens Wednesday night at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center, pulling away for a 6-1 girls hockey victory over Falmouth.

The Red Raiders own a 5-0 record while Falmouth is 4-1.

Sarah Boule and Marisa Peri each tallied twice to pace Barnstable. Boule's first score, from Shannon Cleary at 5:40 of the second period, snapped a 1-1 tie.

Cleary put Barnstable on top 1-0 with the first period's lone goal. Madison Haberl tied the game for Falmouth at 3:49 of the second.

Barnstable had a 37-16 edge in shots.

Marshfield 1, MV 0

MARSHFIELD -- Two similarly matched teams staged an even battle Wednesday until Marshfield tallied the game's lone score with just 4:25 remaining in the game to edge the Vineyarders.

Alanna Moran converted a pass from Christine Graham at 10:35 of the final period beating MV goalie Texe Craig for the lone goal. Craig made 16 saves in the game while her counterpart from Marshfield'sTaylor Newcombe, stopped all 20 shots the Vineyarders put on goal.

The non-league loss evens the Vineyard record at 2-2 while the Rams improve to 3-1.

A strong effort by defensemen Olivia Semino and Maggie Johnson helped keep the island squad in the game.

MV next plays Monday at League foe Hanover.

BOYS

Boston Latin 5, Sandwich 0

ORLEANS -- Tourney MVP Mike Murray stopped 20 shots to backbone Boston Latin's win over Sandwich in the Division II championship game of the Kostas Tournament at Moore Arena.

It is the second straight year the Wolfpack have taken the Kostas crown.

Boston Latin (4-0) had only 14 shots on goal but scored on five of them. Conal Lynch scored three goals for Boston Latin. Joe Petroziello and Ryan Daugherty also scored for the Wolfpack.

Mashpee/UCT 6, Harwich/Chatham 2

ORLEANS -- Mashpee/Upper Cape Tech took advantage of 13 Harwich/Chatham penalties, scoring four power-play goals to win the Kostas Tournament Division 3 title at Moore Arena.

Sean Foley scored twice in the opening period on setups from Taylor Nickerson to get the Falcons (2-1-1) off to a good start.

Kyle Murray also scored twice for Mashpee, Nickerson added a third-period score and freshman Patrick Burke scored his first varstiy goal in the second period.

Tyler Kane and Collin Fader scored for Harwich in the third period. All four goals in the final period, two for each team, were scored in a span of 1:07.

Mashpee goalie Nick Cannata made 22 saves, while Harwich netminder Dalton Smith stopped 35 shots.

D-Y 5, Nauset 2

ORLEANS -- Junior Joe Slovak set up three first-period goals to get Dennis-Yarmouth off to a fast start and the Dolphins skated past Nauset in the Division II consolation game of the Kostas Tournament.

D-Y is 3-2-1, Nauset 1-5-0.

The Dolphins built up a 5-0 lead before Nauset's Richard Emerson scored on the power play at 11:11 of the middle period.

Alex Dockham, Mike MacDonald and Casey Saunders all scored in the first period for the Dolphins. Matt Montalto and Jim Welsh scored for D-Y in the second period.

Cape Tech/CCA 3, Wareham 1

ORLEANS -- Cape Cod Tech/Cape Cod Academy recovered from Monday night's loss to Harwich/Chatham to win the Division III consolation game of the Kostas Tournament at Moore Arena.

The Crusaders started quick, pushing in three goals in the first 8:11 to run their record to 4-1.

Kris Frank got it started, intercepting a pass and firing in a shot just 1:43 into the game. Andrew MacAdams scored at 6:19, just 11 seconds into a power play, and Tucker Hathaway completed the period's scoring at 8:11.

Wareham (2-2) picked up a goal from Tim Lueber in the second period.

Brandon Oakley made 17 saves for the Crusaders, who got their healthy bodies back and were able to skate three lines. CT/CCA coach Scott Rebello had specific praise for the third line of Connor O'Melia, Chris Oakley and Alyssa Garneau.

Pope John Paul II 2, Mystic Valley 0

HYANNIS -- The Lions recorded their first-ever varsity hockey victory last evening, topping Mystic Valley, 2-0 at the Patrick Butler Rink at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center.

PJP II, 1-4, scored goals in the first and second period and sophomore goalie Seamus McArdle recorded the shutout.

Connor Kennedy, converting a pass from Vaughan Grenier on a power play at 9:26 of the opening period, gave the Lions the only tally they would need. Michael Skarbeck added the insurance goal at 7:04 of the second period on a pass from Austin Braley.

The Lions were able to skate three lines for the first time this season after the MIAA allowed a waiver granting permission to Skarbek and Jack Telman, two eighth graders at St. Francis Xavier School to play, giving the Lions 17 players on the roster.

Next up for PJP II is a Friday game against O'Bryant at Northeastern University.
