San Francisco Architect Andre Rothblatt Helps a Family Rebuild a Better Home After San Bruno Fire

Many people lost their homes and were displaced on September 9, 2010 when a PG&E gas line exploded and started fires in a quiet San Bruno neighborhood. Four months later, the focus has changed from grieving to hope and rebuilding.

“There is a sense of anticipation about what the new neighborhood will look like,” said Andre Rothblatt, a San Francisco architect hired by a homeowner to redesign one of the homes damaged by the explosion. “Many of the affected residents are planning major improvements to their homes as they rebuild them.”

Rothblatt just designed a five bedroom, four bath, two-story home to replace a three bedroom, two bath, single-story home damaged by the explosion. The home belongs to a family of two parents and four children who needed the extra space and decided to make the most out of their situation.

The City of San Bruno is expediting the permit process for affected residents. Permits that usually take four to six months to approve are being granted in just a few weeks. The community is also hosting "Dollars and Sense: Home Repairs, Insurance, Rebuilding and Recovery" workshops on January 9 from 1 to 5 pm at Skyline College. The workshops will be led by local professionals and previous disaster survivors.
