“Anyone living in a hurricane or tropical storm region needs to know how to protect themselves and their loved ones,” said Williams, the founder of
• Have your car serviced before the start of hurricane season.
• Assemble a first aid kit, any medicine you might need, bottled water, a flashlight a radio, and a fully charged cell phone. Have these in a portable bag so you can easily take them to the car if you have to evacuate.
• Do not drive in flooded areas or high winds. Flooding frequently stalls cars and high winds can carry lethal debris.
• Unplug any electronics or use a surge protector so that they won't be damaged by power surges.
• Back up the files on your computers (and back up your server, in a business).
• Keeping up on routine maintenance to the roof and foundation of your home or business will help reduce storm damage.
• Flood insurance and windstorm insurance are two separate types of coverage and don't come standard with all policies. Make sure you have both.
• Keep an inventory of everything in your home and business so that you know what's missing or damaged.
After a storm Williams says that insurance companies can be slow to process claims and may offer less than you believe your claim is worth.
“If your claim is denied, delayed or undervalued, talk to a lawyer immediately,” Williams said. “Never accept a check if the amount's too low.”
