Jan. 31--THURSDAY

GIRLS SOCCER

Menlo-Atherton 2, Aragon-San Mateo 2: A depleted M-A squad, playing without its senior starters Julia Stoner and Kelley Eason, tied Aragon in a very physical match on the road. In the first half, Aragon got on the board first when a long kick soared over the defense. The ball was initially blocked by sophomore goalkeeper Ilana Winawer, but then finished by an Aragon forward. The Bears out-shot the Dons 6-2 in the first half, but it was the Dons who took the 1-0 halftime lead. In the second half M-A found the equalizer when senior Cayla Stillman fed junior Amanda Wiseman to even the score at 1-1. The Bears kept pressing and scored the go-ahead goal when sophomore Jordan Olesen crossed a ball to sophomore Sarah McLeod, who finished with a nicely controlled one-touch volley into the net. With 10 minutes to go in the second half and the Bears up 2-1, a ball that wasn't cleared by the M-A defense found its way to sophomore forward Erica Martinez, who was able to tie the score for the Aragon Dons. Despite a furious push at the end -- and a total of 7 shots from the Bears in the second half -- the game finished in a deadlock. Records: MA 8-2-4, 4-2-2; A 1-7-4, 0-6-2

Castilleja-Palo Alto 4, Pinewood-Los Altos Hills 2: Pinewood fell behind 5 minutes into the game, but in the second half and with the wind in their backs and the sun in Castilleja's eyes, the Panthers began to pressure. Two goals were disallowed for Pinewood before Nicole Colonna scored in the 67th minute. O. Biggs then scored in the 77th minute for the Panthers, both of their goals assisted by E. Stephan. Record: P 3-14, 2-7 WBAL Foothill

WEDNESDAY

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Menlo-Atherton 61, Aragon-San Mateo 42: The Bears started fast and led the entire game. Six girls scored in the first quarter to open a 21-6 lead, in an evening that saw all nine of the M-A players on the scoreboard. The Bears were lead by Senior captain Emma Heath, who had 18 including 10 for 10 from the line. M-A led 29-14 at halftime and also got 11 points from Ofa Sili and 10 from Sarah Howell. Records: MA 13-6, 5-2 PAL South; A 3-11, 1-6

Carlmont-Belmont 57, Burlingame 38: The Scots led 26-17 at halftime and came out on top of high-scoring third quarter 18-16. Carlmont was led by Anisah Smith's 27 points, with Sabrina Miller chipping in 11. Record: C 17-2, 6-1 PAL South

BOYS BASKETBALL

Aragon-San Mateo 51, Menlo-Atherton 37: Center Oliver Bucka was the only M-A player in double digits with 16 points as the Bears trailed 25-17 at halftime.

GIRLS SOCCER

Palo Alto 0, Los Altos 0: Defense ruled the day at Los Altos. Records: PA 4-1-2, 3-1-3 SCVAL De Anza; LA 6-3-3, 4-1-2

Notre Dame-Belmont 3, Sacred Heart Cathedral-San Francisco 0: Jessica Parque set up Meaghan Uhl for a goal 3 minutes into the game, with Luca Deza recording assists on second-half goals by Emily Casey (52nd minute) and Sara Eckles (74th). Record: NDB 8-8, 2-7 WCAL

St. Francis-Mountain View 2, Valley Christian-San Jose 1: The Lancers handed Valley Christian its second loss of the season behind goals by Delaney Baie Pridham and Maddie Crain. Records: SF 10-4, 5-3-1 WCAL; VC 12-2, 6-2

BOYS SOCCER

Palo Alto 1, Los Altos 1: In the 20th minute, Los Altos took a ball down the end line and made a nice cross that was nailed into the lower left corner. Paly answered in the 34th minute, when Ed Chen beat Los Altos' left back and curved a cross to Sid Srinivasan, who then headed it up into the upper corner. Records: PA 1-3-3 SCVAL De Anza; LA 2-4-1 De Anza

Sacred Heart Prep-Atherton 4, The King's Academy-Sunnyvale 2: SHP led 3-1 at halftime behind goals from Isaac Polkinhorne, Cam Chapman and Will Mishra, with Andrew Segre adding an insurance goal in the second half. Record: SHP 8-4-1, 7-0 WBAL

St. Francis-Mountain View 2, Valley Christian-San Jose 1: The Lancers got goals from Alec Prusa and Mitch Cunningham. Records: SF 6-2-5, 5-2-3 WCAL; VC 5-4-8, 2-7-1

Menlo School-Atherton 1, Woodside Priory-Portola Valley 0: Menlo beat Priory on a late goal by sophomore midfielder Matt Joss. The Knights were under pressure from the opening whistle as Priory had a few early chances. Menlo reacted well and controlled the rest of the half, creating a few good chances in the process. Junior forward Jackson Wagner had a strong header from 12 yards out after some good combination play with sophomore defender Andrew Arnold that the Priory goalie did well to save. A few minutes later some clever passing and movement in midfield led to sophomore striker Tyler McGraw getting open in the box for a shot, but again the Panthers goalie was up to the task. The second half continued in the same vein with both teams creating chances. The Knights' perseverance ultimately paid off in the dying minutes. With Menlo pushing hard for a winner the ball fell outside the box to sophomore midfielder Keaton Shiveley, playing in his first game back after a 3-week layoff due to injury. Shiveley served a dangerous ball into the box and Joss was first to react, rising high to head the ball into the side netting. Record: MS 7-3-3, 5-1-1 WBAL
