Prep Sports Roundup: TC West wins Big North crown

May 14--PETOSKEY -- Traverse City West clinched the Big North Conference girls soccer title with two league games remaining on Tuesday after defeating Petoskey 3-0.

Kiley Kreple, Madison Jenner and Jordan Balhorn had goals for the Titans, who led 2-0 at the half. Kreple chipped in wtih two assists and Eva Brunetti also had an assist.

West (13-1-1, 10-0 BNC) took control from the start and got on the board with two goals near the midpoint of the first half. The Titans tacked on an insurance goal midway through the second half.

Maggie Troost made one save in goal.

West took the junior varsity game 4-1.

West's goals came from Stephanie Devries, Claire Bergin, Mary-Kate Rose and Katrina Basel. Rose had two assists and Bergin added one assist. Kaylie Camp made three saves in goal.

Grayling 3

East Jordan 0

Courtney Hatfield had a goal and two points to lead Grayling to a 3-0 shutout Lake Michigan Conference win over East Jordan.

Tandy Mitchell and Sarah Lewis also had goals for the Vikings, while Hailey Eames stopped all six shots she faced to earn the shutout.

Grayling (4-8, 4-7 LMC) hosts Kalkaska on Friday.

TC Central JV 2

TC Bulldogs 1

Greta Grootuis scored 29 seconds into the game as Traverse City Central's JV team won 2-1 against the Traverse City Bulldogs home school team.

Dana Pflughoeft assisted Groothuis' goal, and Emma Kosch added another goal with 20:39 left before halftime.

Molly Plamondon added a penalty-kick goal for the Bulldogs (5-4-2), and Sarah Plamondon made nine saves.

Abby Green made four saves for Central (9-5-1).

BASEBALL

Suttons Bay 3 3

Mesick 0 1

Aaron Orban drove in Logan Mikesell with the go-ahead run in the fifth inning as Suttons Bay went on to defeat Mesick 3-1 in the second game of a doubleheader. The Norsemen took the first game as well, 3-0.

Mikesell had reached base on a hit before Orban's clutch single. Casey Cross added a double for Suttons Bay (13-4-1, 6-0-1 Northwest).

Trevor Petroskey went the distance, allowing four hits, three walks and fanning seven to get the win.

Mikesell was the winning pitcher in the opener, walking three, allowing two hits and striking out seven. He also had a hit and scored in that game.

Shamus Megill had a hit and brought in a run on a sacrifice. Orban went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Zach Rice doubled.

Bellaire 10 10

TC Christian 1 7

Bellaire took both ends of a doubleheader from Traverse City Christian, sweeping the Sabres 10-1 and 10-7.

Dennis Alekseyenko had Christian's lone hit of game one. The Sabres' lack of offense spoiled a complete-game outing for Cam Beemer, who took the loss.

In game two Christian got its bats going, but couldn't come up with the win.

Beemer had three hits, Alekseyenko and Grant Maurer added two hits each, and Jacob Rorick drove in two runs.

John Wilhelm started and worked the first five innings, with Alekseyenko pitching the last inning.

Christian hosts its tournament on Saturday, with Buckley, Manton and Newberry the other teams taking part.

TC St. Francis 1 13

Harbor Springs 0 0

Traverse City St. Francis shut out Harbor Springs twice to keep its unbeaten Lake Michigan Conference record intact.

The Gladiators won 1-0 and 13-0.

Tyler Waslawski tossed a complete-game, four-hitter, striking out seven to improve to 5-3 on the season. Joe Studzinski's sixth-inning sacrifice fly brought in Peter McAndrews for the game's only run.

Matt Seybert tossed a four-hitter in the nightcap, but received a lot more offensive support than Waslawski.

Tanner Caplan hit a two-run homer and drove in three for the game, Jake Duell had two hits and Jim Smith scored three runs.

The Glads (13-4, 8-0 LMC) host Grayling on Friday.

LL St. Mary 9 8

Buckley 7 3

Nate Schwartz drove in seven runs as Lake Leelanau St. Mary's swept Buckley 9-7 and 8-3 in non-conference play.

Schwartz belted a three-run homer in a five-run third inning in the opener, while Jack Garthe had two hits and three RBIs and picked up a save by striking out all three batters he faced in the sixth inning.

Collin Platts earned the win, allowing three hits and striking out seven in five frames.

Jackson Ledford took the loss in the opener, striking out 11 and walking three.

Carson Poirier fanned 12 in six innings of the nightcap, while Garthe added three more RBIs on two hits and Schwartz had a two-run double.

Buckley banged out eight hits in the second game, with Dylan McCoy collecting two hits, including an inside-the-park homer.

Ledford and Dominique Kroskie also had two hits each.

The Eagles (8-13) travel Thursday to Mesick.

TC Central JV 15 15

Kingsley JV 1 0

Traverse City Central swept a junior varsity doubleheader from Kingsley, winning 15-1 and 15-0.

The Trojans (17-3) were led in the two games by Ethan Schuh, who collected two doubles, two singles and drove in six runs.

SOFTBALL

Suttons Bay 2 16

Mesick 4 6

Jane Hursey struck out 22 over a doubleheader as Suttons Bay split two against Mesick, with the Bulldogs taking the opener 4-2 and the Norse bouncing back with a 16-6 win.

Clara Jurik had two hits -- a double and a triple -- for Mesick in its win. She also threw six innings and allowed one earned run on five hits.

In Suttons Bay's victory, Anna Steed, Morgan Jeffries, Jessica Hunt and Caylee Pattison each had two hits, with one of Pattison's being a triple that drove in the final run and enacted the mercy rule. Jenee Spoor finished 3 for 3 for Mesick. Jurik took the loss, allowing four runs, striking out two and walking three in one inning.

LL St. Mary 17 16

Buckley 7 9

Mary Rexroat gave up two earned runs in each game to get the wins for Lake Leelanau St. Mary, 17-7 and 16-9 against Buckley.

Rexroat gave up seven hits and walked one in game one, then walked three and struck out three in game two.

At the plate, Hannah Weber was 2 for 4 with an RBI in the opener. She went 2 for 4 in the second game. Rachel Schaub went 3 for 5, Emma Richter and Anna Perkette each went 2 for 4 and Abby Thon was 2 for 5. Freshman Emily Holmes slugged a home run in the opener, then followed that up with an inside-the-park homer in game two.

St. Mary (17-7-1) plays in the Mesick Invitational on Saturday.

Glen Lake 5 11

Benzie Central 0 2

Glen Lake swept Benzie Central to remain undefeated in Northwest Conference play.

Jessica Penny struck out 15 and gave up only four hits in earning both victories. She tossed a one-hitter in the opener and a three-hitter to close out the sweep.

Kelsey Judge had Benzie's only hit in the first contest, a 5-0 Laker win. Kelly Bunek had three hits for Glen Lake and Penny two.

Bunek, Kary Pleva and Olivia Wiltjer had two hits each in the nightcap, while Madison Hill and Casey Murphy scored a pair of runs each.

The Lakers (13-5, 6-0 NWC) travel Friday to Kingsley.

Bellaire 13 9

TC Christian 6 3

Bellaire swept a non-conference doubleheader against Traverse City Christian.

The Eagles won 13-6 and 9-3.

Leading the Sabres were Rachel Peterson (three hits, three runs), Haley Castle (three hits) and Sarah Hebert (two hits, two RBIs).

TC Christian (5-12) hosts Saturday's Spring Swing Tournament, featuring Manton and Buckley.

Grayling 10 10

East Jordan 2 2

Grayling swept a Lake Michigan Conference doubleheader from East Jordan, 10-2 and 10-2.

For East Jordan, Lindsay Schroeder doubled and Lindsey Graham had a single and two RBIs in game one. Sydney Drew, Tommie Outman and Tori Goodrich each collected two hits in the second game for the Red Devils (7-13).

Schroeder added a two-run triple and Graham singled.

TRACK

TC Central wins Golden Baton Meet races over TC West

James Brumfield and Graham Bevier each won two events as Traverse City Central won the Golden Baton Meet 96-64 over Traverse City West.

Petoskey was also in the meet, falling to both West (111-41) and Central (126-32).

Brumfield claimed the 110 hurdles in 17.25 seconds, leading a 1-2-3 sweep along with Justin Roy and Nick Hart. Brumfield also won the long jump (18'8.5").

Bevier took both the 1,600 (4:47.71) and 3,200 (10:44.13) runs. Nick Friar and Seth Beaudry completed a 1-2-3 sweep in the 3,200.

Sean Williams won the 200 in 24.72 seconds, and Roy won the 300 hurdles (45.47), with Nic Norton, Hart and Brumfield taking the top four spots.

The Titans' Marco Morcotte, Tyler Sepanik, Nate Reicha and Alex Everts won the 3,200 relay in 9:09.35.

The Trojans took the top five spots in high jump, led by Zac Blake's 5'4", and followed by Hart in second and Abe Russell, Norton and Roy tied for the third.

Lee Arthur claimed the shot put with a throw of 35'7.5". In pole vault, Central had Max Franz (11'6"), Russell, Chase Kelly and Dominic Farmer take the top four spots.

West's winners included Jake Long in discus (107'8"), Donovan Michael in the 100 (11.9)Calvin Hilt in the 400 (54.93), Nick Amato in the 800 (2:11.14).

The Titans also won the 400, 800 and 1,600 relays.

GIRLS TRACK

TC Central 97

TC West 78

Traverse City West's Olivia Bishop won three events, but it wasn't enough as Traverse City Central won the Golden Baton Meet 97-78 over the Titans.

Both Central and West routed Petoskey, with the Trojans winning 121-42 and the Titans taking a 124-44 victory.

Bishop won the 100 hurdles (15.98), long jump (16'6.75") and high jump (5'2").

The Trojans didn't have any multiple winners in the non-relay events, but had numerous victors.

Graceanne Tara won the pole vault (9'), Taylor Cobb took the discus (106'11") and Brianna Worthington claimed the 300 hurdles (50.28).

Hannah Keyser ran a 12:19.21 to win the 3,200, Grace Failor's 2:32.78 time was tops in the 800 and Courtney Stewart took the 1,600 in 5:35.47.

Central won all four relays. The 400 team of Jessie Kushner, Megan Matteucci, Anna Arnold and Courtney Cadotte won in 51.99 seconds, while the 800 quartet of Erin Lipp, Morgan Scollard, Cadotte and Savannah Champion took its race in 1:47.53. The 1,600 squad of Lipp, Kaite Moses, Lauren Marsh and Joe Reist won in 4:13.36 and the 3,200 team of Shaylee McAuliffe, Zoe Gerstle, Annie Botsford and Failor ran a 10:59.33 to win.

West's other wins came from Allida Smith in the 100 (13.37) and Jessica Gockley in the 400 (1:04.27).

Petoskey' winners were Deniece Clark in the 200 (28.26) and Alexis Knapp in shot put (32'4.25").
