Nursing facility project is unveiled: New building will replace two nursing homes on 8.5-acre site [Albany Times Union, N.Y.]
Jan. 30--SCHENECTADY -- Capital Living and Rehabilitation Centres will build a $40 million skilled nursing facility at an 8.5-acre site off Hamburg Street in Schenectady that is adjacent to two nursing homes it already operates.
Those homes, The Avenue and The Dutch Manor, were required by the Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century to merge into a new 240-bed unit, downsizing by 70 beds.
The new facility will replace those homes, which will continue to operate until after its construction is completed. The Avenue will be demolished after the new facility opens, while Dutch Manor will be converted into an assisted living facility in the second phase of the project.
The project was announced Friday morning by Schenectady officials. The project is expected to preserve 300 jobs in Schenectady, officials said.
The Schenectady Planning Commission approved the project Jan. 20, and construction is expected to begin later this year, pending state and local approvals.
The building process likely will take at least one year.
Metroplex Development Authority provided no financial assistance but did help with technical details, including permit applications and property acquisition, said Ray Gillen, the authority's chairman.
Capital Living, which operates eight skilled nursing facilities upstate, is based at 26 North Broadway in Schenectady.
